21.30 train out of Huddersfield cancelled

Did the Government or another train operator take over this franchise. Complete shambles and questions need to be answered.
Operator of Last Resort (OLR) so it's effectively state-operated now, but that was never going to make much difference. It's been run into the ground for years.

Yes, the Government didn’t renew Transpennine Express contract so as of May 28th they brought the services into the Department of Transport‘s Operator of Last Resort.

If its any consolation: East Midlands Railway frequently cancel portions of the Norwich-Liverpool "service".
The 11:45 Nottingham to Liverpool is cancelled almost daily - at the last moment.
It shoves hundreds of people on to the 12:45 - like sardines, or people get the slightly slower Nottingham - Leeds Service and get the local from Sheffield.
Its a flippin scam.
East Midlands Railway are on the verge of handing back the keys!
"Our" foreign-owned railways are in schit state

yes, dont be under the illusion its just your local train operator. ours are just as bad down south. and we have less railways (except london, weird that)

Wait what I'm on this 😅 whys it cancelled is they anymore
Mainly it's shortage of staff. Working rest days is covering some of it up but that doesn't always work.

The problems TPE(well TPT now)have, i could go on for ages, but they're now run by a firm of consultants appointed by the government. but still a lot of Senior Management and Directors remain.

When the ownership changed over, a lot of staff(particularly at the Manchester end)said they didn't want to work for the new company, as they can do, and just left...

I use Transpenine quite a bit and they are a nightmare.

There is industrial action going on at the moment and They are heavily affected.

I've been left stranded a few times recently.

If it's any consolation You will probs get a £15 compensation :mad:

Part of the problem is the way they split the crews. The Newcastle - Liverpool service could be one crew doing the full journey back and forth. Instead, they had the genius idea of swapping crews at York and again at Manchester.

So now if one person is off sick it doesn't affect one service: it has knock-on impacts for every service that directly shares a crew, then every service that shares a crew with one of those services, and on and on and on. Disruption spreads like wildfire.

In a sense it’s partly the opposite. They over expanded the service offer without the staff to deliver it.

In the last timetable before Covid (it’s now reduced back again somewhat) they had four trains an hour between Leeds and York, one through to Middlesbrough.(with the extension to Saltburn planned when the new rolling stock came on line), one to Scarborough and two to Newcastle. This is comfortably the most that has been provided in my lifetime. There wasn’t even an hourly Darlo to Manchester direct in the eighties and there was no regular passenger service at all on the diversion through Yarm and Brompton.

They didn’t have the staff to deliver it reliably then and the issue has compounded with the regional rostering others have mentioned and the overtime ban. So it’s still their fault they failed to deliver, and it’s still about underinvestment. But we need to be careful what we wish for as the obvious answer is to cut the service back. We’ve already lost many of the through services to Scarborough and I expect Middlesbrough could easily be next.

Clay has hit the nail on the head regarding crew changes on route.
We have enough staff to run a service from Scarborough to York but get shafted by the lack of staff from Manchester who bring some services in and any sickness at that end.
When we had an emergency timetable, which was a shuttle to/from York, they nearly always ran.
I've brought this up time and time again with my MP, we have no alternative service to York and no express buses.
As stated if a crew took a train from say Newcastle - Liverpool and back that is effectively a full shift and everyone gets to their destination - job done.
As for the person responsible for the way crews are rostered.... probably now employed at the club to bring in digital ticketing!

School night In August?
There was a good programme on the problem with trains the other week that was presented by Ben Elton. It highlighted Huddersfield as a particular black spot. Real shame for the fans, particularly as the game kicks off earlier.
I haven't been to school since a time when the cane was used routinely.

Knew I shouldn't have tempted fate. Currently waiting for TPE to put me in a taxi all the way to Liverpool after they've cancelled my train while it's supposedly still on the way here

Shocker that Clay. Are TPE sorting and paying for your taxi?
I've been stranded before at Hudds after last 2 trains to Manchester cancelled, they didn't do anything just shrugged their shoulders and I ended up paying £60 in an uber
