šŸ™Cut your energy bills nearly in half with Octopus Tracker

Octopus Energy just done a deal to take Shell's 2 million customers making Octopus the second biggest energy supplier in UK after British Gas.

They're a pretty good success story, their owner is from saltburn I believe

He is, think there's a couple of people on here that know him from the past.

He comes across really well too and is often found chatting directly and helping customers on Twitter.

They do look to be a great company and seem forward thinking. They remind me a little of Monzo and the like but in energy.

Still in contract with British Gas, so thought Iā€™d waste their money getting smart meters installed. Installed them but they donā€™t communicate with each other. Apparently Iā€™m in a black spot for smart meter network so i think that blows my chance of moving to octopus smart tariffs

As in your meters are far apart? Or your house is in a black spot?

Did BG commission the meters or abort the install?

Theyā€™re installed, electric is working smart but gas wonā€™t communicate to electric. Opposite corners of the house externally - so thatā€™s to blame apparently.

So smart meter installers aren't meant to leave the meter there if they can't commission, they have obviously been able to do that to leave it there but it's probably then lost communication. It might be worth chatting to Octo on Twitter to see if they would let you join given that you have had smart meters fitted and see what they say, they can only say no. If you can get a meter, and a mini, that sends meter readings via your WiFi connection so they may allow that but not sure - nothing to lose by asking though!

The 2-3 weeks is for smart install btw. so they'll give you a switch date when you join; You can opt to ask for a smart meter as part of the switch but on the go live date I'd both fill in the form AND tweet them asking for an install

Then soon as you have a smart meter, 1) request an octopus mini via the form (google it) and 2) request to join the tracker
requested to join the tracker through he link they sent. followed up through twitter and email and now reply. how long does it usually take to be put on tracker?

If you're already with octopus it can be same day to a could days usually but they will usually backdate it to the day of the request

Just Chase up on Twitter if no reply

Iā€™m looking at switching to Octopus soon if they still offer the best tariffs for EV cars. Iā€™m going into a whole new world with EV so just taking as much advice as possible at the mo.

Are you going to move your usage into the night for high use items and do you use elec at peak times like 4pm-8pm? If so, you may find tracker better for you even with an EV. The ev tariff and agile is good if can move usage to the cheap time because at peak times they get quite expensive

Take a look through the last few days 30 min time slots and think when you do use power and what you could move. Tracker cheap all the time but not as cheap as the EV one or agile during the cheapest hours but no expensive hours

So ev one (intelligent) gives you a fixed time period where it's cheap aka outside those times it's pretty much price cap at just shy of 30p a unit

Agile gives half hour pricing but the peak time is expensive; so you really need to be able to load shift on that one. If you have battery storage and solar these become better options

Basically the orange and pink slots there are expensive and yellow is roughly in line with tracker. It has better days too where slots are really cheap or even negative but I think it's more work unless you're really invested. If you don't work from home and don't do all your washing etc when elec is cheap, tracker could be a better option - you'll need to think how you do/will use your electricity

For gas; tracker all the way

I changed over to octopus on the 31st and requested on the 1st to swap on to the tracker.
They dm me today and said, because we've only recently joined, it could take upto 2 weeks to move onto the Tracker.
Also applied for the octopus mini and I'm on the waiting list and will be notified one dispatched.

Hi @ThatFragranceGuy . Thanks for your help so far. Do you have a referral link I could please use to claim my Ā£50? also received the below from Octopus. Just checking tracker is still the best way forward?

"Thanks for expressing your interest in Octopus Tracker. You can read more about the Tracker tariff here: https://octopus.energy/smart/tracker

While this can represent good value, it does involve some risk. Tracker doesn't cap the maximum rate at the same levels as the flexible tariff, which can leave you exposed to higher costs.

For example, market spikes can send Tracker prices up to 100p/kWh for electricity or 30p/kWh for gas ā€“ thatā€™s three times higher than most customers are paying right now on variable tariffs like Flexible Octopus. You can read more about this here: https://octopus.energy/tracker-faqs/

Something to bear in mind as well is that you get charged for the monthly average of all the daily readings, not on a day-to-day basis.

Lastly, I would also need confirmation that you accept the below terms and conditions please:

I agree that my energy price will change daily, solely based on fluctuations in the wholesale market.

I understand my energy prices are calculated using a set formula, and I will be notified with reasonable notice of any changes to the formula.

Mine is:

I'd just read the first post in this thread with all the info. Right now, I still think it's the best option. It's currently about half the price for gas and just over 10p a unit cheaper on elec - so on Electricity alone right now it's about 35% cheaper inc standing charge plus you get the Ā£50 credit

This thread will be busy with people discussing it and there's details in the first post of apps and alerts you can set up if you want to. I'd say as long as you check it once a week and make sure you're still happy with the rate you're good.

Ultimately, if you come off it you can give notice for about 9 days and they'll put you on the price cap tariff hit then you can't rejoin for 9 months so it's up to you if you want to do that if prices rise, but based on last year, with everything going on in Ukraine, for most of winter it was still cheaper than price cap.
