“Proven Good Manager” Michael Carrick

Letting an inexperienced manager deal with this mess was only going to end up one way, not sure what sacking him will achieve, how many times can we rip it up and start again.

The club was in such a mess last year that no good experienced coach would touch the job which is why we had to take a risk, we will be in the same position if we sack him

0 wins in 11 games.

At what point doesn’t stop being “daft”?
2 wins and 1 draw in 8 games.. this season.

We have played SIX league games.. we’ve had a dreadful start and we’re bottom of the table.. no need to make stuff up and pretend we’ve nearly double the number of games we’ve actually played.

If you want to compare to last season.. wait until after 11 games.

I hate the October shuffle of managers, but if things do get worse and Carrick goes I dread to think of the type of manager who would take this job.

It would be classic Gibson to turn to an experienced firefighter like Pulis or Warnock, which would be the worst possible fit for this project.

We’re cost-cutting, and equally have just signed a whole squad of new young players to develop. A Warnock type would keep us up but they always want their own players who are wily experienced types. So we’d be tearing it up yet again and filling the squad with Sol Bambas and Yannick Bolasies.

At the same time, it’s not a job for an inexperienced manager because the players are so inexperienced and if we do change manager, it will be because we’re in a relegation fight.

It’s not an attractive job at all. We have no money, what looks like a poor squad, you can’t sign loads of players because we just did, you’re working under a (****) DoF with a very patchy record and we’re bottom of the league. Not sure who would take it.

Perhaps. And he didn’t play for Real Madrid for no reason either. Just seems an odd place to go, “I don’t wanna call for Carrick’s head so I’ll put it all on his assistant”.

Think even if the bad run continues, we should stick with Carrick. He's part of the problem, but all of the blame can't lie solely with him.

My issue at present is two fold.

First, Carrick is absolutely inflexible from moving away from the 4-2-3-1 which isn't working. Teams know EXACTLY how we set up and can tweak their tactics/formation to gain the upper hand. Seems to be happening game after game. We need to stop the rot and if this means moving to a 6-3-1 formation so be it.

Second, he doesn't know what his best XI is. Team is constantly changed every week.....with exactly the same results. This is very concerning, how long do we keep this going? 4-5 changes every game until we hopefully stumble on the best XI and formation?

We are weak. We are defensively shambolic - with the midfield responsibility of helping out woeful. We are missing loads of chances. Perfect storm.

Top things off 25-30 min queues at HT to get served........🙄

The two wins against Huddersfield who had 10 men for 80 minutes and a club from League One, which is ironically where we could be next season

I think this one is an inevitable consequence of soo many new players just being brought in. It’s a worry that his team selection falls apart straight after an international break but half the squad have only been here five minutes.

And, talent-wise most of them are much of a muchness. Lath and O’Brien are the only two whose price tags and reputations means they have to start, O’Brien’s the only one who’s come in from a level above.

Pick a starter between the two new left backs and three new number 10s. I can’t, I’ve barely seen them.

If I had to guess I’d say it probably does more often than not. Like if you took 100 professional footballers, and 100 FMTTMers, the ex-pros would make the better coaches overall.

Not withstanding the fact that some ex-pros aren’t that good at managing, or aren’t as good as they were at playing.

It was down to carricks tactics last season why we did well according to some here, that’s why he got a tune and wilder didn’t

Same with wilder vs Warnock, tactics

But as soon as carrick has a bad run it down to the players and recruitment

Id accept that, if there wasn’t a below mediocre performances. Either he’s good with tactics or not.

My point was, playing for Real Madrid does not make him better at coaching than someone who may have spent their entire career at Hartlepool. Total different set of skills

Indeed. But he was apparently cutting the mustard last season, as was Carrick. Seems strange to decide Carrick is still cutting the mustard but Woodgate isn’t.
