Sky just said new Sunlun manager IS Tony Mowbray

I think he spent less than £3-4m quid in his entire time here, after replacing Strachan. Not many could have done a better job imo.

Mowbray bizarrely just couldn’t organise our defence and had a blind spot with Jason Steele who was a very mediocre keeper. Didn’t take Karanka long to sort that.

Had a little read of their board. One of them said he may be ok for Blackburn and Boro but we are Sunderland.

Now I've been on this earth for over 40 years. During that time I've seen us get to 5 cup finals, including a European one. I've seen us win one trophy. I've seen us in Europe twice. I've seen the likes of juninho, boksic, mendieta and traore play for us.
Blackburn won the league and a league cup I think.
Sunderland got to one cup final that I can recall, which they lost. And the best player they've seen play is probably Kevin Phillips.

Dear me. Some of them are as bad as the Geordies. :ROFLMAO:

They also held the record for a while as having the worst premier league team in history

It’s seriously unreal how deluded they are on that forum. Aside from the early 1900s they’ve mostly been a yo-yo club throughout their existence . Cheaper pricing is the only reason they sometimes get close to filling that stadium that is evidently too big for them and a sad attempt to mimic newcastle.

When they started establishing themselves more in the league they averaged mid 30k for attendance . That was when Quinn was owner and Keane manager so their peak years . After sedgefield which has sizeable boro support, County Durham is mainly mag or Sunderland . I reckon there are just as many mags as Mackems there, while most of Northumberland is mag . It’s why Sunderland will never be as well supported as the mags

Ask them what league they were in when they won the cup in 73

They don’t like that one

I agree, Jason Steele cost us a lot of points under Mogga and if he'd replaced him with a solid keeper early on, things could've been a whole lot different under Mogga's reign.

A post on their board reads something along the lines of...
Mowbray had one big job at Celtic and failed. He should stick to managing the small clubs like Boro and Blackburn.

The opinion some of them have of themselves is unbelievable. This is a club that has spent the last 4 or 5 seasons (it's been that long I can't remember) in the 3rd tier of English football. They gain promotion and suddenly when Alex Neil leaves they are expecting an appointment such as Bielsa 😄. They need a reality check.

I understand it suiting Mogga on a personal level. His family live in nunthorpe so he can get home every day but on a professional level, he's miles to good for them.

Last year he was at blackburn working with players like Brereton Diaz and now hes at sunderland working with luke o'nien 😞

They are the “Del Boys” of the Championship. Definition of the word “Deluded” is “Believing something that is not true”. (y)

They've just lost their beloved manager to stoke and the penny still hasn't dropped

Congratulations to the Mackems (y)

I actually think it is a brilliant appointment for Sunderland and good luck to him.

He cleared the deadwood from Strachan, found diamonds on pebble beaches and for same price of the James Morrison sale, yes we sold him and he bought him, he snapped up Friend, Dimi, Ayala, Adomah, Leadbitter.

He also brought on Ben Gibson.

He played attractive swashbuckling football and prevented us from heading to league one.

He got shafted by Gibson in that Karanka was in the stands about a month before he got sacked. I was in the legends lounge for the Yeovil game and I thought Figo was next to Gibson, it was Aitor.

Author was appointed and he given a fortune to spend, he called in favours from his mates with loans in from Chelsea and Spurs. Carlos De Pena, cost a fortune.

With the same strachan team he had us too after a sky game against Sheffield Wednesday. Lack of funds prevented a title challenge.

At West Brom he steamrolled the league, with Chris Brunt and James Morrison being premier league players for a decade.

He will do very well at Sunderland and I wish him well after the 6th September.

Fair points, but unfair on Phillips, who you could argue did more for Sunderland than any of the stars you've named did for us.

Could you ???

Like what

Name on thing Phillips did for sunlun that we hadn’t done.
Goals season after season after season. Phucking loads of them. Consider that in the context of the tonnage of words that have been unloaded on this forum over the summer about "proven goalscorers".

Didn't say it's an argument I'd make or that it would be an argument you could convincingly win, but to just dismiss Phillips like that is massively blinkered.

We get this every single time
I’m not bothered how much he spent but I am bothered about people trying to rewrite history and say we played good football under him.
There are a couple of ‘knowns’
1. He didn’t spend a lot
2. We were shocking, really really shocking……during his time here

I’m not doubting Phillips ability I’m arguing he gave sunlun more than our stars.

Cup finals ?
European campaigns ?
Cup wins?
League placing ( with European qualification)

Erm

Argue away, but of that list in the originally quoted post, Juninho's the only one you could say contributed more for us than Phillips did for Sunderland. And you could say the same about plenty of others not named.

I don't think we're disagreeing here, but take off the local rivalry goggles, because Phillips was an absolutely magnificent player for Sunderland.
