This 100%Just because Connolly and Balogun weren't successes here shouldn't mean we no longer look to bring players in on loan.

I didn't say we should not bring in loan players as part of the summer package. I simply said if we can possibly get Gyokeres then we should.Just because Connolly and Balogun weren't successes here shouldn't mean we no longer look to bring players in on loan.
Excellent post.Slightly controversial viewpoint maybe but I do feel the club and some fans put a bit too much emphasis on scoring records when we're looking at strikers.
That's not to say they don't matter, they do. But sometimes it feels like that is the only consideration we look at, when it only tells you part of the story. In recent ish years Rhodes, Britt and Boyd came in with very strong goalscoring records. The trouble is they offered little else.
On the flip side Nugent's record was modest in comparison, but yet was a far more effective player. He didn't hit double figures in our promotion campaign, yet had more direct goal involvements than anyone else.
While you don't want a completely non scoring striker, it's what they contribute to a teams overall ability to score goals that is more important. What are their attributes? Do they match the style of play we want to play? Are they fit, can they press well, is their decision making good? What's their touch like? Can they hold the ball up?
I'd say those things are more important than how many tap ins they managed at their previous club. Because I think if they offer all the above, the goals will come anyway and we'll score more as a team.
I'd rather have a 12 goal a season striker that is an absolute handful week in week out, than one who scores 20 but who loses the ball everytime they touch it.
So if we sign Gyokeres for example I'd hope it's because his overall play is seen as an ideal fit, not just because he scored 18 goals.
Sounds like he would be to be fair (and Armstrong too).
I'd take him on loan ahead of Gayle, but wouldn't ever want to buy him. He has flopped already in the PL and will not make it there - he looks lost. So worth the wages in the Championship, but no big fee.Think Armstrong would score a boatload for us. Best name linked so far for me
It might be a bit harsh to write him off in the PL after one season, think it would be a different story say if he got promoted with a Championship club and was settled with his teammates off the back of scoring a load of goals. Look at Bamford when he moved around to Norwich/Burnley/Palace, looked like a rabbit in headlights but once it clicked for him at Leeds he carried it into the PL.I'd take him on loan ahead of Gayle, but wouldn't ever want to buy him. This video that I nicked from Twitter showcases his ability pretty well. Very willing runner, strong, holds ball up well, looks to link and brink other players in and better on the floor than I might have thought.Excellent post.
It is why I am so drawn to Gyokeres. He scores goals AND has all the other attributes you rightly highlight.
He is a physical handful who works hard, has good touch and awareness and combines well with other intelligent players. AND he scores goals.
Compare that heads up style in possession to the repeated times Sporar got the ball in space and just ran with it until someone took it off him. Would love it if we could get him, like - every player around him would look better. This video that I nicked from Twitter showcases his ability pretty well. To be fair I accept that none of us know the size of our transfer budget.I didn't say we should not bring in loan players as part of the summer package. I simply said if we can possibly get Gyokeres then we should.
What I don't remotely get is why the Championship's best striker would not be worth signing just because he would take up "too much" from a budget you have no idea of the size of.
He would be the best signing we could possibly make up front. Let the club decide whether they can afford it. Gibson has steered us through FFP skilfully to date.
This idea that we can keep chipping away and keep building a squad and one day we might scrape up is as depressing as it is ridiculous.
We are in good FFP shape, have a decent base and capability to spend enough to get home this season. I'm glad the club will show more ambition than some of our fans. Gibson has been working very hard to set this position up.
There will be change from the Spence fee, there is the Morris money, the Spence bonus too.To be fair I accept that none of us know the size of our transfer budget.
The £20m fee we've received for Spence has given me a bit more confidence to say that we should go all out and try to sign Gyokeres - I'm not denying that he is a good player and there's every chance he'd be a success here.
I think I'd be more supportive of this is we already had a strong squad, and only needed 3 or 4 additions. As it is, I feel we need 8 or 9 players bringing in. I still worry we will find ourselves in a situation where we'll spend big on Gyokeres and will end up not being able to afford to bring in a decent LWB for example, meaning we'll be left with Bola as our only option.
I agree, but don't forget the Spence transfer fee will be split over the length of his contract, so the benefit won't all be realised this summer, but over the next few seasons, which is equally good news, but in a different way.We should all be very upbeat and lift our heads a bit re targets.
That doesn't matter, that is cash flow. We are so into Gibson it is not the factor.I agree, but don't forget the Spence transfer fee will be split over the length of his contract, so the benefit won't all be realised this summer, but over the next few seasons, which is equally good news, but in a different way.
