Adam Armstrong

Do you think so? I think Gyokeres is superb but £18m frightens the life out of me.

Imagine we had bought Sporar, Balogun and Connolly, we’d be lumbered with them for years like we were Assombalonga. With our record for signing strikers I really like the loan strategy.
Read what you’ve written. You really like the loan strategy that led us to not scoring enough goals last season and signing two spuds in January?
Why is Gyokeres now £18m by the way?
If that includes performance related elements it would be an obvious bargain.
Thankfully Im sure the club will be looking at this lad and trying to do a deal with Coventry.

Let the club worry about the budget. I think many fans are adamant that we will be getting frees, loans or bargains. There will be a very big signing I’m sure and that makes sense to be a striker not a LCB, LWB or GK.
It will still require other smart cheaper recruitment, but I think he will sign for us soon and far rather that than Armstrong or Gayle.

Just because Connolly and Balogun weren't successes here shouldn't mean we no longer look to bring players in on loan. Gayle and Armstrong are proven at this level. Connolly and Balogun weren't and I'm sure Wilder won't make the mistake of bringing in strikers who are unproven at this level again.

Also, you can use Connolly and Balogun as examples of loan signings being unsuccessful, but I'll use Assombalonga and Braithwaite as examples of big money signings being unsuccessful.

Why was Assombalonga £15m?

I'd prefer us to be low risk where we can keep having a go every season rather than having a blowout every 4 years on expensive duds and getting stuck with them. I said on another thread if the Gyokeres deal was structured if our favour then I don't mind it as much, especially if he wasn't on a huge wage but I'd imagine he would be for that kind of fee. If we paid £8m and the rest was based on promotion and goals then that's not bad. If it's £18m up front similar to Assombalonga then it's super risky in my opinion and I say that as someone who thinks Gyokeres is phenomenal at this level.

Why was Assombalonga £15m?
Because our scouts were too stupid to realise he wasn’t the same player as he was before his bad injury, he’d lost his turn of pace and could no longer run in behind or out sprint a defender basically half the player he was pre-injury. Before injury he was worth it after wards he wasn’t but our numpties were watching the YouTube videos from the wrong season. Same as Gestede 🤦‍♂️

I also think spending that kind of money on a player based on what is basically one good season would be a big gamble. He’s averaged roughly 1 in 3 so far in his career which is reasonable but not earth shattering. I’d offer £10m with add ons for promotion. We don’t want another Assombalonga situation if he doesn’t deliver

It's not quite so bad if we can get him on a reasonable wage, that's the biggest issue when it comes to selling. We couldn't shift Assombalonga because no one was stupid enough to pay him what we were so why would he leave?

if Gayle is one of the players coming in - it has to be on a play as you play deal as he's hardly kicked a ball for two years, we don't want another player on ridiculous fat contract based on historic goals & performances with zero recent form to back it up.

For me Gayle is several years past his best & I just can't see Wilder being interested - as a starter & the club in a big contract.

lol where did 18 million for Gyokeres come from?

Even the most ardent Coventry fans are expecting 10 million will be enough to see him leaving

Quotes from a Carlton Palmer interview with Football League World, so guaranteed to be 100% factual.......
