Morgan Rogers

You have to remember that his job was to create opportunities, and that is very difficult, you tend to lose the ball more than others.
When the team is low on confidence, that player can look worse, but his first touch, balance and power, (superb) he was quick for a big lad, it was only a matter of time before he started to find his groove..before he was sold he was either assisting or scoring practically every game.

God knows what he will be worth after a few seasons in the premier league.

Exactly that. Touch, balance and awareness. Those things cannot be coached and it was clear very early Rogers was a class act.

Some people just don’t see that, they only see him losing the ball and think he is a poor player.

That first sentence is really important. People saying “oh but he didn’t look good at all at first”, forget he created 12 or 13 clear cut chances for us in the first 5 or 6 games of the season, of which we converted zero unfortunately.
He was a handy scapegoat for people who don’t really understand what’s going on. Looked a very good player from the start, who like you say occasionally lost the ball as he was trying to make things happen instead of passing 10 yards sideways.

Some people see someone like Adama and think he’s better because his athletic ability was amazing. His footballing skills are way below Rogers though. I’d prefer having Rogers in my team over Adama every time. Not saying Adama couldn’t be electric, he could.

Sky are raving about him too for the second saying another superb ball through to Watkins, I am glad he is taking his opportunity and enjoyed watching him for the short period we had him.

Hopefully some other younger players will want to come here to, in looking at the development of Rav, Rogers, Tav, Hackney, they can all be developed under Carrick and his coaching team.

Let's hope McCabe, Matthews, Bridge can push on over the summer along with Coburn getting fit!

I still expect us to sign a other forward but josh proved he can be a different type of focal point for us and when he was firing prior to his injury looked a real handful for teams to deal with!

To be honest he didn't look effective enough for us at the start of the season. I remember the opening game against Millwall and we didn't look like scoring as a team. It seemed to click for him in the League Cup, but that was against League 1 and 2 sides, then in the Championship in December.
He created a lot of chances in those first 5 or 6 matches where he was played out of position. He definitely looked a good player, just not a back to goal striker yet

A forward's job is surely to not just create, but to have close attempts and score. At Villa he is scoring. We played Rogers well up the pitch and fairly central. He should have had opportunities to score.

He had some nice touches and was a nuisance to the opposition, but the team only scored 3 goals in our first 5 League games (Millwall - home, Coventry, Huddfield - home, WBA and QPR - home - one of the goals was a penalty (after Rogers was subbed), another a long range shot from Hackney.

Rogers to me didn't look like a Premier League player in a Championship team in the early season, and his record at Blackpool didn't neither before we signed. I don't think I was unique in thinking this. Well done to our recruitment team and the Villa scouts.

Blackpool also ended up playing him out of position, but when he was played in the right role he was handful. Scoring as a striker requires other attackers to create. Sadly rogers was our only creator but when he played cf then he couldn’t create for himself

He had 16 goals and assists for us in all competitions. I'm not sure in recent memory we've ever had a young player have that sort of impact for us in their first season.
Plus as I said before he created loads of chances we didn't take.
The fact he only scored a couple of times in the league doesn't mean that much, Juninho scored 2 league goals in his first season with us. Doesn't mean he wasn't great.
Like you say, a lot of people couldn't see Rogers potential but as often is the case people are often wrong. They're generally reluctant to admit it mind.

2 league goals in half a season. He did create a few though. Nothing out of the ordinary.

We did brilliantly to make £14 million on a player we bought for £1 million and had for only six months. Would anyone seriously have made a different decision at the time? Still think it was the right move and we’ve probably got more incentives tied in.

On a separate note, that Darbo on Twitter is a massive cvnt isn’t he? Don’t like to give him air time but what a ****. Gets his kicks from trying to hang people out to dry publicly.

Yup, double down and quote stats that back up their initial judgement. We were right he was a brilliant young player, some people just weren’t able to see that and are unwilling to try and learn why they couldn’t see it, I’m letting that go though as it impacts them not me 😂

Rogers struggles with us were primarily down to him being played too high up the pitch, a result of our injury crisis this season.

Once he got a run of games playing slightly deeper, not dissimilar to the Akpom role, he began to build on his performances and gain confidence.

Hopefully the lad continues to flourish and he gets a big money move to financially benefit us in a couple of years.

He has loads of potential, some could see it, others didn’t rate him, he was made a number 1 target by a top premier league club and coach.

He is playing very well for Villa.
That's right, but let's not blag about how good he was for us. He wasn't. He was bog standard and our form hasn't fallen off a cliff since he left.
