Super Bowl LVIII

I only watched the first half, but I thought focus on her was noticeable by its absence, given how frequently she was mentioned during the build up.

She was as intrusive and game-spoiling as kneeling for a whole 3 seconds.

As for the American sports thing, I find it an interesting game of tactics, certainly more so than either code of rugby. Didn't think much of it until lockdown, but learning to appreciate it was one of the things that got me through that.

I was ambivalent about who I wanted to win until they showed the 49ers party at Elland Rd. Pleased for the chiefs.
She has no control of how much the TV channels/other media show of her. She is there supporting her boyfriend.

Plus it seems to annoy all the right people, so it’s ok by me.

I really enjoyed the game and I think a special mention needs to go to Tony Romo for his commentary. He's really knowledgeable and always seems to get inside the heads of the coaches and QB's to call the upcoming play accurately. I'd imagine for a new fan that he's a dream to have in the booth because it's like a tutorial with him at times.
Not sure how much was spent on making the ads, but they were certainly star filled, my favourite being the Dunkin Donuts one.

Funny thing with Romo is that he’s now generally slated in the US for his analysis and commentary. He started off being really popular but that’s definitely on the wane.

I still think he’s ok but he did make a few errors last night.

There are a lot of stoppages so they need something to fill time and having Swift there gives them something to generate content. It would be a lot more annoying in a football game if they were constantly looking at the same person in the crowd. It's probably more similar to tennis where they show the family reaction after every point. It's very American to spend all game pointing out which celebrities are there.

The game itself was enjoyable if not a bit more defensive than I like to see. I appreciate good defending but there's nothing better than seeing fast moving drives and bombs being thrown.

The 49ers really should have won. It was their mistakes with the extra point missed and the fumbled punt rather than anything the Chiefs did brilliantly although the final drive in OT did have some Mahomes TD inevitability but it should have been sewn up before then.

Really enjoyed it. SF needed to score more when they were on top. They really dominated the play but KC'S defence was awesome when it was needed and you just knew Mahomes would get it right in the end.
Thought Jones was immense.

It’s the first time I’ve ever watched one and I found it incredibly monotonous. Ads every minute are a joke too. Maybe that’s just to fill out the lack of quality on show.

Keep watching; you'll learn to appreciate the intricacies and subtleties of the game. I thought like you once; I did find a lot of the break down and analysis of plays very useful in understanding the game. I'm glad I invested some time and effort in it.

It looks really easy to play QB?

I get that it must be more difficult than they make it look but throwing a forward pass isn't exactly difficult is it?

I usually only watch bits of the superbowl and understand nothing about NFL.

Loved it....just watched it this morning after doing an episode of the likely lads and avoiding all news outlets this morning so I didn't get the score 🤣
Can only imagine how much the bookies made on a tie...
But what a game...tactical ...ups and downs...injuries...Good officiating.
Spot on
I don't really care who wins I just like watching the superbowl each year

I’d say the complete opposite. I’d say QB is probably the hardest position to play in any sport.

With regards to an earlier post about the lack of quality, there was a lack of explosive plays but definitely not a lack of quality.

Yes, it is very difficult. Distance, trajectory, and direction need to be close to perfect. That's hard enough, but when you're being chased by some 300 pound guys intent on putting you in hospital, it's really hard.

I think it is easy to play QB, but very hard to do it well.
I suppose it's very easy to play any position in football, but again, very hard to do it well, particularly when you're directly competing with people who are very good at stopping you doing your job. I guess that's the essence of all sports.

I imagine it's like playing darts, but you have to decide which target you are aiming at, all the targets are moving, opposition players are trying to block the targets, and if you don't throw fast enough, you get flattened by a 300lb man running at 18mph.

Sounds complicated, right?

NFL coaches and quarterbacks have studied play concepts and calls for most of their football lives. Trust me, it’s not as hard as it’s made out to be.

Memorizing a playbook with 75-120 plays is overwhelming to say the least. Now, throw in 15-30 new plays for a certain team you’re playing against, another 10-15 new check downs per game for an entire season just to add into the mix, sometimes a cheat sheet is required.

To top it off, when a play is called in a game, the quarterback has 40 seconds to call the play, relay it to the huddle, get to the line, set and snap the ball without a penalty.

Head hurting yet?

Plus if you look at the defence and don’t like the coverage they are showing then you have to either change protection or change the call.

On any passing play you have to know the route of all the receivers and where they are supposed to be, so that you can throw in anticipation of where they should be if the coverage allows.

Its incredibly challenging, physically and mentally.

I went to my first nfl game a few years ago in buffalo and the one thing you don’t realise from TV is not only how quick the snaps are but how tricky it is to follow who actually has the ball as they dummy and fake all the time.

The us camera crews are amazing at following the action but live without the in field graphics and markers it’s really easy to get lost in the fog of war as chaos ensues for the 20 second snap.
