12 Years of Boro - BVB

Today marks the 12th anniversary of the friendship between Middlesbrough and Borussia Dortmund fans.

On this day two Boro fans on a beer fueled football trip to Dortmund v Levekusen had a chance meeting with some BVB fans whilst walking to the Westfallenstadion, who took us off the beaten track and away from the usual, touristy bars to some outside bars tucked away next to some tennis courts. They were amazed that people from Middlesbrough had travelled just to watch BVB play (Yes we didnt understand why they thought that neither), we chatted for some time and exchanged scarves, stickers and email addresses and then arranged to meet up after the game. At the time we thought it was just all part of an amazing trip and great hospitallity and never thought about how it would progress, but here we are 12 years later.

We fell in love with the city and Borussia almost instantly with how perfect the trip was and then on the megabus back to Boro from that there London, we were contacted by one of the guys we spent many hours and beers with at that matchday. From there we grew closer as pen/email pals and later that summer the Dortmunder arranged to visit Middlesbrough and take in some pre season friendlies, namely Whitby away! A trip to England filled with plenty of pints and Europa Parmos and this Dortmunder fell in love with Middlesbrough!
As the years have passed, more and more visits to Dortmund with more Teessiders, and more visits to Middlesbrough with more Dortmunders, witnessing home and away games of both clubs, relegation and promotion, Champions League final defeat and DFB Pokal wins, charity pushes, family events and parties, not to mention turning over the Georides twice this season, a friendship has blossomed and grew into a family. We are now officially recognised as a fan club of Borussia Dortmund under the name of Boro BVB 2012 as of last summer with currently 70 members. This gives us more access to tickets to Dortmund games as well as other perks such as discounts and tours as well as cementing the link between the two clubs and places we love.

Really is amazing and some times unbelievable to see how this has all snowballed into what it is but this will only keep going. We are awating talks to MFC on hopefully having the Dortmund side recognised as an official fan club of Middlesbrough.
In December we pushed a charity campaign for Teesside Hospice in which we raised £156. This is something the fan club will be looking to do in supporting both charities in Teesside and Dortmund.

We will look to update the fan club membership around twice a season as more people want to be involved, its free and we are open to all aslong as you are a Boro/BVB fan. We have helped so many Teessiders fall in love with BVB and Dortmunders fall in love with Boro and we want to help many more, with potential future group visits to watch BVB and potential watch along meets to watch games..

Up the Boro BVB

Love the german people, got some good friends in Koln/Wuppertal. Would absolutely love to take in a BVB game day
I ended up on the drink with the Germans in Leicester Square after the Euro 96 Final. Great people.

I was in charge of a group of 35 students going on an adventure camping holiday in France and was crossing over on the ferry the day after the Champions League Final when Dortmund got beat at Wembley by Bayern Munich. The ferry was full of Germans and the atmosphere seemed a little tense. I asked all the students to stay in one area and had plans to evacuate if trouble started.

In the lounge we were in were mainly Bayern Munich fans and they seemed in good spirits. Halfway through the journey the doors in the lounge opened and a line of Dortmund fans came in and did the conga around the BM fans. You would have thought Dortmund had won the cup the way they partied. They made a fuss of our students and one or two ended up with Dortmund scarfs they were given.

Somehow, I don't think English fans would have behaved in the way the Germans did.

I’m going over for the game against Frankfurt next month.
Going on Friday, night in Oberhausen, go to Oberhausen away to bocholt on Saturday then over to Dortmund for their game on Sunday. Do the stadium tour on Monday morning then home.
Any recommendations for anything else? Cheers

Also interested in joining been to Eintracht, Gladbach, Hoffenheim & Munich to watch fo watch the Bundesliga, best atmosphere at Footy Grounds in Europe & you can order beer in your seat. Would love to witness the wall 1st Hand

Excellent - I managed to get to a Dortmund game in 2019, three of us, all Boro fans did a bundesliga weekend, we did 3 games in 3 days - Dusseldorf on Friday, Dortmund on Saturday and Bochum on Sunday.
I wrote up an article for it and it was published in Football weekends Magazine
