Defending for their goal

I have watched the goal back and struggle to see how fry gets any blame?

Engel plays a cross its behind the players, Sunderland break with Clarke, ayling, howson and I think Azaz are chasing back they fail to tackle when Clarke pulls back, Fry went to come out but then follows his runner as Clarke plays the ball across the pitch, rav has moved inside slightly engel isnt back in time and no one has covered for him the player has a powder puff shot, glover gets his save wrong, can be forgiven as he made a coupler of other good saves, if there was any blame its the three not making a tackle on Clarke where the main issue is but in no way is Fry arlt fault IMO
Engel is just coming back having run the length of the pitch to put a cross in and the majority of the way back too. There’s no defensive support from the midfield, VDB is then forced to commit, but nothing can excuse the goalkeeping

2 players are closing Clarke down. Fry is just hanging around behind them and doesn’t see his runner nearly quickly enough. By the time Fry starts to get close to his runner, Rav has come inside to track him.

I haven’t rewatched it, but I’d be furious that we didn’t bring their breaking player down by fair means or foul

Why is engel so far up the pitch late in the game. We seem to concede soft goals all the time on the left late in matches coventry was exactly the same.

Engel was attacking and had just whipped in a decent cross. The breakaway came from the other full back naively getting sucked in towards Clarke, who rinsed him with a smart one-two and was away.

If Ayling doesn't sell himself the attack doesn't happen.

Needless to say, Glover should've saved it.

Not sure some people were paying attention or have a clue reading some of the comments.

1) Engel has commited himself forward to deliver a cross. He’s got no chance of getting back into a defensive position in the time the ball was turned over. The midfield have got to fill in.
2) Possession is turned over and Ayling follows Clarke. He gets rinsed and can’t recover, creating an overload on our right. He should have stood his ground and kept his shape.
3) Clarke manages to carry the ball and play in their player inside right. Rav is in a good position but inexplicably gets sucked across before the pass, creating even more room for Rusyn who was in yards of space. Terrible goal keeping gifts them a goal.

Some people need to drop their agendas with certain players as it’s clouding their judgement. Engel was the last player to blame. If you want to know why he was so far up the pitch then ask the manager. We continued going for a second goal. Right or wrong, that’s how we play. That’s the risk.

Ayling sells himself, Rav runs into a worse defensive position. The keeper make a howler.

Gutted for Glover has he’s generally been solid and a decent number 2 filling in for Dieng. Happens to the best of them but it should never have got to that phase in play.

Agree with all of that, but bring the player down when we transition from overload attack to defending outnumbered. That’s FA level 2 stuff. Bring the fucher down!

It’s my biggest frustration with us at times. We don’t commit enough cynical fouls to stop counter attacks.

Ayling was on a yellow so probably didn’t want to do it but a midfield can track across and do it.

So many other sides do it to us. We’re way too soft at times

Engel should NOT be committing himself forward for a cross , he has a player in front of him to do that.
I said at half time ' they are getting behind Engel all the time because he bombs up and leaves a gaping hole.
The goal was because HE was out of position yet again , we had no left back . School boy stuff happening every game with him .
Did ok going forward , but his job is left back , and he is poor at it , and costs us points .
Thomas should have started , and hopefully will from now on , 2 points dropped today through Engel .

Ok, but by getting forward he is presumably doing exactly what Carrick asks him to?

Absolute nonsense.

We’ve always played with a forward running left back under Carrick. Very rarely if at at all would you see Giles hold back and tuck in.

In the game situation maybe he shouldn’t have done that, but surely that’s down to Carrick to tweak the tactics and instructions to players to not bomb forward?

Game management etc. it was lacking today from us but that’s the risk of the way we play.

Obviously, some people will ignore the reality of what actually happened and the mistakes 3 other players made… because they don’t like Engel. Simple as that.

He’s had his ups and downs with us and been far from perfect but I refuse to blame him for today’s goal. He’s playing as instructed.

Nonsense. Obviously made your mind up on Engel early and don’t want to admit that you were wrong

The way we play, he is literally the only one who provides width down the left

That’s the system. Absolutely nothing to do with Engel. I can’t think of a single time in that first half they got him. We play Thomas, it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference to what happened. Watch the game again, there is no attacker ahead for Engel to pass to. This is by design. He’s asked to be the wide option attacking and going forward so we can congrats the centre. Prime roberto Carlos isn’t running the length of the pitch to get a cross in and managing to run the whole length back ahead of their player.

And all that aside, 99/100 times a keeper is saving that shot. It’s a goalkeeping error

I blame the forward players for both making the same run and not pulling out the box for Engels cross.

Akpom would have dropped back and scored it. Wouldn't have been a problem.

Crazy how much stick Engel gets at the moment. Ayling was ran ragged today and was way over committing for their goal.

For what its worth I dont think either Engel or Ayling had bad games either. We are lacking goal scorers!

Totally agree with this, we need to get Adam Clayton back in as a specialist Cynical Foul on Transition Coach.

He'd have them doing training drills and when the opposition are breaking we'd be employing sneaky ankle taps, shirt pulls, agricultural hoofs and rugby tackles in no time.

I suppose we see different things, I in no way blame fry for that goal as there are 3 other players around Clarke as he plays the ball wide.
