Defending for their goal

Very naive. Just not aware of who is around them. Rav and Dael just not spotting who they should be picking up.

That was a situation where we outnumbered them and should have been in control of. Suddenly there’s a man on the edge of our box in 20 yards of space. I don’t understand how this happens at this level.

That is the biggest issue. The defending was awful.

I've said for ages that I think we need a combative, mobile central midfielder. Those players know when to cover full backs and don't venture forward. If we had one then we'd not get exposed anywhere near as often and it frees the other minds to play further up the pitch. Both this and last season, we are exposed down the left and it's because we don't have anyone disciplined enough to fill in for whoever plays left back. Get the right man in and we'll be much better, with or without a striker.

The mistake for there goal was solely down to Glover, there was two or three other mistakes prior to it reaching him.
Not sure that isn’t a contradiction…how can it be solely down to Glover if there are 2 or 3 other mistakes?

Glover is mainly responsible obviously. But the defending from Dael and Rav was terrible.

The problem we have - which is mentioned time and time again - is players marking space, or going to where they think the ball might go.

Nobody actually thinks to mark the opposition players. We had enough defenders back - easily - but none of them are doing anything.

One of the biggest differences between the championship and the premier league. It isn’t just us, but we are particularly bad at it.

Tell me what Engel's role was in the moves leading up to the goal?

I'm pretty sure he was doing what he's asked to do every game.
He was in a central MF position, not even on the (wide) LH side so not too sure why he was there.

But to have the Sunderland lad in that much space, no one picking him up......not sure what's happened. No one covering or players guilty of chasing the ball. Definitely lost their shape and were punished 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Yep, nobody covered. He was attacking down the flank He was our furthest forward player when our move broke down. How do you expect him to mark their striker on a breakaway from that position?

We had plenty of defenders and midfield players nearer but none took on the responsibility of picking him up.

I think you have mistaken O’Brien for Engel there

Fry got sucked in and left his man to run in behind him. Van Den Berg moved to cover Fry’s man just as Fry decided to chase back. He should have stayed with his man or maybe even stepped up to leave both Sunderland players offside. The next error was Glover leaving too much of his near post open. It was disappointing but something I’m sure they will all learn from.

I have watched the goal back and struggle to see how fry gets any blame?

Engel plays a cross its behind the players, Sunderland break with Clarke, ayling, howson and I think Azaz are chasing back they fail to tackle when Clarke pulls back, Fry went to come out but then follows his runner as Clarke plays the ball across the pitch, rav has moved inside slightly engel isnt back in time and no one has covered for him the player has a powder puff shot, glover gets his save wrong, can be forgiven as he made a coupler of other good saves, if there was any blame its the three not making a tackle on Clarke where the main issue is but in no way is Fry arlt fault IMO
