Villa have competition for Rogers

Pretty clear where his progression as a player will come from, he's ultra creative, but just needs a bit more care with his passing, a bit more work on challenging for high balls, an get his shot away a bit earlier. When these start to improve he'll be unplayable at this level.
just screams needing consistency really. and if he started scoring regularly he'd have the full package

Exactly this isn the Brighton or Brentford model

it’s the Crewe one

A bit harsh on the Crewe model? It started when they were on a 20 year run in the 4th tier, and ended with 8 seasons in the second tier, their only seasons at that level since the 19th century. We start from a better position of course, but the Crewe model worked wonders for them.

To be fair he is a regular starter, he's just been out injured most of this season. He started 60 out of 69 Premier League games in the 2 previous seasons when fit.
Still not worth £50m, and I dunno who they expect to pay that for him. I see Villa fans on Twitter giving it the "Boro being greedy! Selfish!" etc about standing firm on Rogers and at the same time talking about wanting no less than £80m for Ramsey 😅

Maybe Villa are hoping he will go all Pritchard and flounce out so that we accept final bid to be rid
If Rogers was to flounce and do a Pritchard then the worst thing we could do would he cave in and accept a low ball offer.

We would be showing weakness and would then never receive bids at an appropriate level for our players in future.

If it came to it then Rogers would have to train on his own for the rest of the season before deciding if he wanted to do the same again next season or issue a public apology and be reintegrated into the group in the summer.

£15m does not look a good deal if it convinces MC that he would be better off moving to another club. It really depends if Rogers is happy to wait until the Summer. He could be the difference between getting into playoffs or not.
Could be, but probably won’t be. The odds have to be currently against us making the playoffs, since we are not currently in possession of a place, and not currently on a run that suggests we are on track to getting into one. A fair guess of our chances might be one in three. But getting in the play-offs is not an end itself, only a means to an end, and a one in three of sneaking into fifth or sixth gives you about a one in 20 of promotion on current stats.

And our chance of promotion wouldn’t be zero without him. You would expect it to be somewhere between one in 20 and zero. So the marginal cost of losing him is quite small in the bigger picture.

Any player could be the difference between us, making the play-offs and not, especially when we are as marginal candidates as we are at present, but that isn’t an argument for not doing any business at all. There will be a price where it makes sense. There must be. it feels quite important to keep Carrick on board for this one, but if he is I can live with this sale if it happens.

Should we make the playoffs, evidence of the last 15 seasons suggests we do not suddenly have a 25% chance of promotion.
The 6th place team has gone up once in that time, so the 6th place team has about a 7% chance of going up.

I'm not suggesting the final placement directly dictates the chance: both are a result of the 6th place team not being as good as those in 3rd and 4th.

I would not be prepared to gamble much, either in terms of incomings or outgoings, in an attempt to scrape the playoffs this year. That doesn't mean I'd sell cheap, or sign a good player if he became available. Either decision would be about the long term, not this season.

Rogers assists and xA compare favourably to other attacking midfielders / wingers
His xG isn't bad but he is undeperforming (3.8 v 2) - probably made up for that in the cup (the stats below are just league)

These statistics show that he has a major flaw, that he doesn’t pass the ball enough and when he does it is very poor. It confirms what the eye sees, that is he’s very selfish and unable at present when to judge when to pass to a colleague and when to beat a man. So his statistic for progressive carries is poor, in the bottom quartile. If he can improve this aspect of his game he will be an excellent Championship prospect. If he goes to the Premier and plays the same way he will simply run into trouble and be hustled off the ball all the time.

Amazing that, he's selfish, doesn't pass the ball and when he does it's very poor and doesn't know when to release the ball, and yet he's managed to create more chances for his team mates than literally the rest of the team put together. Far and away the most assists in all competitions too. Absolutely remarkable...
Or...you're talking complete cobblers. Villa and Boro who are both very committed to having him as their player, say it's the latter.

Squad assists to date 31. Rogers 6 equal top with Crooks, and similar playing time. Certainly not more than the rest of the team put together.

Your only looking at a basic assists stat - in those cases the other player has to score or it doesn't count - Scouts aren't just looking at goals and assists...

They look at what a player will bring to the team.... and Rogers is an absolute mile ahead of other Boro players in most of the attacking/forward possession based expected stats (npxG + xAG).

I think Rogers can develop into a top player, currently he's very early in his development and will progress surrounded by better players and a top level striker coach. We'd miss him but he's not irreplaceable

That's not what I said at all. I said chances created he's created more than the rest of the team put together which was hyperbolic but probably not far off true, and very clearly put he had more assists in all competitions. He has 9 which is more than anyone else.
On clear cut chances created he's joint 6th in the whole of the Championship, but no.1 for chances created per minute on the pitch. So how's he done that if he's "selfish and "very poor" at passing the ball?
Utterly daft opinion if you ask me.
