Is It A Derby?

Their obsession with attendances is embarrassing mind. It's all they have got though.

Most of their fans haven't seen them do anything. We have seen us win a major trophy and beat the likes of Roma and Lazio in Europe, sign world class players.

i'll have some stats on attendances soon they have selected memories, their crowds got as $hit as ours going into the 80s (high unemployment/hooliganism?) but yes they do get behind their team when they're doing well. They got some massive crowds at Roker in the run up to the 73 Cup Final

I was surprised how average up and down our attendances were at Ayresome in the late 70s going into the early 80s the novelty of top flight football soon clearly wore off

They get good attendances. Mind their prices are much lower than ours and have been for years. They just have a bigger fanbase. Although historically their attendances are much more similar to ours than Newcastle. It's an inconvenient truth for them that they are looked upon by the rest of the country as a club that is similar in size to Boro and not Newcastle.

Derbies are only really such important games to those who have people in their life that support the other team. You know, knobheads. I used to live in Newcastle. I know good Geordies and bad ones. I used to hate when we'd lose and I'd have to go into work with them. Now i dont live in Newcastle, I dont care about Newcastle. I dont know any Mackems, so I dont care that much about our matches. They're not derbies to me.
I don't know any Sunderland fans but work with a few Newcastle fans (they're not knobheads btw).
The Sunderland game has always been more important to me despite that.
So to summarise, what are you going on about?

Who the **** are they kidding?!

They wear those smog outfits, sing about taking the holgate, sing they hate boro, talk about us on their forum.

Oh and they are on for maybe their biggest gate of the season (boxing day game will run it close) for a 12 o'clock game, that's on TV against a team they don't care about.

I can't believe they aren't self aware enough to see how stupid they look saying it. Idiots. It's hilarious.
This exactly

Back in the day it was a big Derby, but seems to have lost that status in the last few years but come 12 noon tomorrow it will be that Derby again, hence 45k attendance.

I never saw Sunderland win @ Ayresome in a competitive game.

That's from 1969 to 1995.

At the Riverside I have only seen then win twice and once in the Cup in extra time. 11 games?

Thre was a bit of trouble at the 1971/2 game - there was no proper away end and some Sunderland fans go in the Holgate early.

The worst fighting I saw was 1980/81 in the alley near the new sports hall at around 2.30pm. Sunderland fans tended to park near ther North Yorkshire infirmary and walk in from that direction so the first thing they hit was Ayresome Park Road near the alley way to the Holgate. They brought about 6k fans in a crowd of 40k. Some of them started shouting the odds and saying where are all the Boro fans. That was a red rag they soon found out and the alley became a blody mess. Yhre wewere some real Boro nutters in those days. I remember a home game against Newcastle in 1977/8. Around 3pm a big spce suddeny opened up in the middle of Newcastle end with 6k Geordies in it. A small group of Boro fans had deliberately gone right in the middle of the Newcastle fans and it looked like they were on some sort of Kamikazai attack because they were outumbered over 100 to 1. These were the bad old days and some Boro hooligans were creating the Millwall of the North.
