The Car (New Arctic Monkeys Album)

If you want the Arctic Monkeys circa 2005 try The Reytons.
I mentioned them earlier, they're even from south yorkshire, nowhere near the songwriting and playing talent of the Arctic Monkeys and never will be, but similar vibe to the first AM album

Stumbled across them a few months ago before they broke. Straight away thought "Ey up they sound like early Arctic Monkeys". Good band....keep struggling to get gig tickets in Manchester though 😡😡

The Covasettes and The Lathums too
My Mrs has been into The Lathums for ages, from when they were just beginning. Saw them support Blossoms last year, thought they may struggle in a big arena but they were excellent.

The Covasettes ring a bell......I'll have a listen to some of their stuff 👍

I listened to The Car for the first time today while driving. It is garbage. Exactly the same as the last garbage album. You could listen to them both back to back and not pick anything out from them. An hour and a half of nothingness. Just sounds like one long song.

If this had been their first album they'd have got nowhere near a record deal.

I saw someone on Twitter saying the last 2 albums are identical to Vic Reeves signing in the club style from Shooting Stars and it is bang on.

I'm amazed people are so surprised at the direction that Turner has taken AM, there are many points of reference back to their 2nd album, such as 505, Cornerstone, Reckless Serenade, Piledriver Waltz, No1 Party Anthem, and a few others had that croonerbility that we see predominantly now.

I'm really enjoying it this weekend

I wouldn't mind the odd song, like we had with those mentioned but 2 albums of it just becomes dirge.

People say the sound like The Last Shadow Puppets on new stuff. That may be the case but they are fairly boring as well. Only a couple of decent songs.

If you like the album they are playing it in full on Jools Holland 5th November.

It will be on a good time of night for you to drop off to sleep 😴

Yep there is definitely a thread from the last Shadow puppets. Reading a few interviews it seems Turner is big into his mid 21st century European film soundtracks. Again, this comes through clearly on the new one.

I admit it's a ballsy move but for me personally I think it's what keeps me coming to certain bands. If I think of those bands who have consistently achieved commercial and critical success, it's largely been the result of an evolution in their sound over time.

In fact I can think of very few critically successful artists who have used a standard template and stuck with it for years on end?

Is anyone watching BBC2 now with Jools Holland and Arctic Monkeys?

They sound brilliant. Playing a mixture of songs here but mostly new stuff, and the odd throwback to their old performances on JH.

Great Saturday night viewing.

Recently started listening to them and really enjoying their stuff. It's doesn't take itself to seriously, comparisons to the monkeys are purely because the lead singer has the same accent and they play indie guitar rock. Plenty of bands over the years have sounded "like" AM. Milburn, Little Man Tate, The K's for example. Alex Turner didn't invent that sound, he basically copied what The Strokes were doing. Which is fine by the way as nobody owns an exclusive style of music.

Anyways.

My current favourite from them. Very relatable.

They ain't doing too bad for themselves with sold out shows everywhere they go and doing Sheffield Arena next year which could be their Oasis at Earls Court in 1995 moment.

Been a bit luke warm about the new AM stuff when hearing it on the radio. But seeing the live performances on Later it made a lot more sense. Great vocal performances. Even better was Body Paint on Jonothan Ross. It's all massively "Vegas", but at least he has toned down some of the ridiculous Elvis affectations now. Mostly.

Loved the Jools session. New stuff sounds fantastic, to the extent that the old stuff pales quite a bit in comparison (although that may be overfamiliarity).

They're in Brazil at the mo and I'm pretty sure the Primavera Sao Paolo set is on Youtube. Unfortunately no special guest appearance by the little fella.

I had a similar thought, when they went to the archive and showed their first performance.

I've heard them comment a few times about how they themselves look back and laugh about how fast and hard they used to play, asking themselves why were they in such a rush.

I think Alex is a fabulous vocal talent and I have loved so many of his lyrics, but sadly I just find the last two albums incredibly dull.
It is not that I want them to stay the same as when they burst into being, I like bands evolving. I absolutely love the evolution to AM, but certainly hoped for much better in the next moves.
I am disappointed and a bit sad; will not be going to a big stadium to see music that simply doesn't belong there - and I have my memories of seeing AM's when they were what I loved.
I'm happy that some like the meandering recent stuff and hope they enjoy it live too.

Given the AM album a few weeks and I jave to say it's much better than I was expecting.

It's going to translate to stadium gigs really badly, but then by the time bands are big enough to be playing these venues it's a bit lost on me anyway.

As an album it works for me, it's a slow burner and obviously very different to the earlier higher tempo stuff, but I'm enjoying it for sure.
