The Car (New Arctic Monkeys Album)

Listening to it now, I'm enjoying it a lot more than TBH&C surprisingly. Every song feels like it could be a Bond theme.

I still prefer the heavier/faster stuff but this hits a different spot personally.

Not sure how you can say if this was released by anyone else it would never get a mention, like. The production is still second to none.

Hello You is my favourite so far.

that’s kind of my point
production is great - I agree
as such, it masks what, for me, is poor content.

a new band would not have the privilege of paying the production costs and no label would take a punt with what is on offer.

in fairness they can do what they want, it’s risk free and most bands have at least one dud in their portfolio

im moving on to the new Loyle Carner now

The two singles are, in my humble opinion, awful. Did not like the last album and have no intention of listening to the new one. Really not getting the direction they have veered off to.....🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Not for me, but each to their own. Sure some people will love it.

There's lots of bands who will churn out the same stuff you fell in love with them for, the majority of bands probably fall into that category.

Some will change genres and their own ability to move across, around and develop their sound is what attracts some new fans, sees in some others and in some instances transcends the 'just another band' rotation.

I think Arctic Monkeys fall into that category and if you've listened to all their albums in full as a fan, that's been the case throughout.

Part of me would love this and the last album to be Alex Turner solo albums so Arctic Monkeys could keep hitting those guitars heavier but ultimately, I have over time grown really enjoy TBHAC and this one I like immediately.

That said, I'm a huge fan of both LSP albums, maybe that's why.

Agree BN - they do move on and, in the main, I’ve enjoyed them
In concert they deliver …….with the classics largely from the 1st album.
They do have belters on other albums too btw

New Lyle Carner tho 💥 💥💥

I've played it a couple of times at work today and can't get into it. That might change in a few weeks but right now it's not for me. Which is fine by the way as I'm sure others will enjoy it.
I'm not sure if the recent albums are more Alex Turner influenced instead of the whole band influence or if that's just me. For example the first three albums really let Matt show his stuff on drums but this one and the previous album haven't really had the songs to showcase his talent.

The whole album seems unconvinced in itself to me. As usual with Turner the lyrics are complex at times and pivot around on themselves with some odd detours, whilst the orchestral backing is sometimes right up there and swells to meet the vocals. I just miss the energy and brashness of some of their earlier work, they seem to be heading towards being a retro-styled lounge ensemble rather than a rock outfit.

I like some tracks and you cannot fault the production which would stand up alongside some of their best work, but at least a couple of the songs could have been from one track such was the similarity with the music, tone and Turners vocals.

It'll get some more ear time but after two spins I suspect I'll be skipping some tracks.

I have loved watching them evolve over the years and personally like bands to shift and try new things but I just cannot get on with these past two albums aside from about 4 tracks.

Nothing about this is hoping for them to repeat their first two albums, I just think it's a bit meh.

If we all liked the same things it would be a boring world of course. I'm happy to accept they just don't do it for me personally and others might enjoy it

They are premiering a live show on their official YouTube this Sunday for those interested in how the new stuff will sound.

@Randy, I’ve seen a lot of people say this but Matt Helders gives some good insight into this in the interview below, around 12 minutes in. Worth watching.

Cheers, I'll give this a watch later.

Imagine if Bowie had just kept releasing slight variations on the laughing gnome for the entirety of his career.

Artists need to evolve. You can either go with it and enjoy it or just stick to listening to the older stuff you used to enjoy.

But to say a band should just keep releasing pastiches of their early stuff is just daft

I’m on my second listen now and I’m mostly enjoying it. Certainly prefer the second half. It actually reminds me of a more last shadow puppets album than arctic monkeys

I’m a massive AM fan and I’m still ‘on the fence’ after a couple of listens..hopefully it’s a grower but don’t think it’s the type of thing you could smash an arena tour with..hopefully come June next year they realise they need to play their older stuff

They always do play the older stuff, there’s usually a good mix from every album.

When I saw them during their last tour, they only played a few from the then latest album.

Absolutely correct, it's the artists prerogative how they evolve.

Don't blame them for it at all. Many bands who I have followed from day one have evolved into something I'm "meh" about. But that's fine, I'll listen to other music I'm more in to. Plenty out there. Happy to go back and listen to earlier stuff I prefer.

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

If you want the Arctic Monkeys circa 2005 try The Reytons.
