Chuba Goal Reaction

Incredibly powerful, emotional reaction from Chuba following his goal last night. The referee was superb giving him the time to recover from tears to reflection to prayers to a roar of pure emotional release. Quite clear what he has gone through this week. Fans hero racially abused online. The club stand behind him. His fans stand behind him. He is an intelligent, articulate man, he must have been in turmoil.
I cannot possibly know what it feels like to be racially abused but that reaction from Chuba Akpom showed just how deep the wounds must go. I hope those fans that boo players taking the knee also reflect on how confusing and disturbing that must be for Chuba, Isaiah and Zack Steffen etc.
After the game there were some groundstaff on the pitch. One was getting ribbed by Boro fans for being overweight and then for being bald. Am not saying that is right or wrong but he was able to cllap and face up to this as a joke. A bit of banter. Racism is altogether on a different level it cuts centuries deep. Chuba's goal reaction really brought this home to me.

The boos for the Blackpool players taking the knee was very clear on the radio.

Why do it? It needs to be called out more.
Disappointing. I can’t help thinking that by us not adopting the gesture that’s it’s created an us and them dynamic that has less to do with racism but more to do with folks that speak out on issues and folks that don’t.

The opportunity to educate fans is still there..

But we've been asking this for over 2 years, some people will always do it. Calling it out only gives them what they want.

Have to admit, after 2.5 years of it, I'm struggling to see whether its actually making any difference and/or if its over-simplifying what is a very complex issue to solve. I appreciate why it started and what the scenario was back in June 2020.

I think it would have been appropriate for us to do it last night after what has happened to Akpom.

I also think it would be interesting to hear Zack Steffen's views on us not taking the knee, what with him being an American, where the gesture originated, and of mixed heritage. He certainly did it on his own at the start of the season, with 1 fist raised and head bowed.

It's embarrassing if our fans are doing that.
It generally seems to get good applause now at other grounds.
I think though it has to be both or neither - I wish the club would reconsider their position if other teams are doing it.

I'm so pleased for Chuba. I was quite vocal on here about being disappointed that he was being brought back into the squad and expected to get the goals for us, and I'm beyond happy to be made to look so very wrong. He's been great for us this season, he comes across as a great person in his interviews, and the racist abuse he's suffered is unforgivable. That goal last night obviously meant so much to him, and it was pretty moving to see his reaction to it.

It’s a lot for young players to take on, if one it should be all. Supported by team mates.

Agreed, it was Asambolonga who when captain made the call to not do it, I wonder if the players have discussed returning to do it again ?

That said it's become pretty meaningless in a lot of ways now, as largely even the discussion around the roots of the gesture and why it was needed had faded away.

I cant believe anyone would boo it, but then we do have our share of toxic horrible fans who will trot out some "all lives matter" rubbish no doubt.

If it’s become meaningless why continue with it?

I appreciate tackling the issue of racial abuse needs to continue, so what could clubs/EFL/FA/broadcasters do that IS meaningful?

I was glad the club called Twitter out this week. Noticed at least one other club contribute by retweeting and ‘standing with us’.

Sadly I do think it is motivated by racism. The usual tired responses that "all lives matter", or "politics shouldn't be seen in football" tend to confirm that view.

‘less to do with racism’ - it’s a complex issue, one that won’t be solved or improved in real terms if people aren’t willing listen to a number of different voices and try a number different approaches. Racists are idiots.. unfortunately not being racist doesn’t automatically make people clever either.

Think I heard it said that more widely players in this country were going to shift to just doing it now and again, when there were external reasons to emphasise it.

Given what happened with Chuba this week, the Blackpool game would have been a perfect time for our players to do it under those criteria had we not opted out a while back.

Couldnt agree more Rob (y)

Nobody is ever going to convince me that booing the knee taking is coming from anywhere other than a racist attitude.

Not one person has ever offered an explanation that sounds anything other than absolute cobblers.
See everyone who voted Tory because they are anti marxist, anti leftist and they wouldn’t vote for a terrorist synthesiser.. well it’s that.

It’s that exact thing. Taking the knee is political.. and BLM is ran by Ann Teefer.

It requires honesty and education all round. Not everyone is going to accept what racism is for a start, where it comes from will be an uncomfortable conversation. Anti racists would have to be educated also.. not as easy as it sounds.
