Matt Clarke

very good player at this level. Id' take him all day long.

More of a defender than Greaves and not as big or quick. Career championship stats:

AerialsWon: Greaves 3.6 / Clarke 4.6
Tackles: Greaves 1.6 / Clarke 1.3
Interceptions: Greaves 0.7 / Clarke 1.5
Clearances : Greaves 3.8 / Clarke 4
Dribbles: Greaves 0.3 / Clarke 0.4
Blocks : Greaves 0.6 / Clarke 0.6
Avg Passes: Greaves 46.9 / Clarke 49.9
Pass success % : Greaves 77.3 / Clarke 78.1

To be fair Clarke hands down wins the stats battle, both offensively and defensively. I'm shocked. I still think Greaves has greater potential as a ball playing CB, but Clarke right now might be slightly more polished, but then he's 4 years older.

Not as much potential sell on value, but then won't cost as much up front either.

And every club needs players who are the finished article as well promising youngsters. McNair-Lenihen-Clarke is balanced, has loads of championship experience and is 3 centre backs pretty much at their peak but with plenty of years ahead of them.

As discussed at length on here, statistics might not necessarily tell you the full story. But I do think a good "interceptions" stat is the mark of a good defender (as per the Maldini "if I have to make a tackle, I've already made a mistake" quote).

Good in the air is important too, should help with those soft goals from crosses we seem susceptible to.

Thanks for the effort put into your reply. Very informative and insightful. 👍

He's terrible. If you thought Aden Flint was a clogger, wait until you see this guy. Not what we need at all, unless it's as a backup for Lenihan if Fry goes.

You don’t win player of the year 4 times out of 5 seasons if you are a clogger. The lads a good player and a good defender more importantly which we need, the fact he is left footed and good on the ball is just a bonus

Fans love a defender who is whole hearted and committed to the tackle. He is not, and never will be, a ball playing centre back.

Hard life for 25!

If this is the case why isn’t he thought of as highly as Greaves? I don’t know anything about him, he stats look good. There must be something about him why WBA haven’t signed him up again (after he got player of the season there) or Brighton haven’t given him a chance.

I don’t need to, there is evidence there.
In that video? 1 minute of YouTube?

He is strong in the tackle, committed to winning headers. There was one ambling run where some League 2 forwards put half hearted challenges in, that doesn't convince me he's this wonder player all rounder. He can kick it with his left foot though, so fair play
