You need a squad. 20 good, strong outfield seniors. It’s no good selling Tav if he’s not going to be replaced. McGree was surely signed to strengthen up our choices and add competition. We’ve also allowed Payero to go, and we were already short of a more defensive-minded midfielder. If Tav goes we need three more in. It’s a big ask.

Going into a season with only Crooks, Howson and McGree as your midfield options is a recipe for disaster. You could point to McNair but pushing him into midfield highlights the hole that still needs filling on the left-hand side of the backline.

Selling Tav without replacing him with a quality midfielder would do some real damage to our team IMO. We’re still short anyway so one of our better ones leaving really affects things. We MUST bring in some quality before the window closes.

I agree, i think Wilder would be very reluctant to let Tav go, he fits the role and work ethic perfectly. Selling proven players is aways extremely risky, that money often dwindles away

Those saying McGree can play there. He gets injured. Then what?
 
I’m sure we have a list of targets for a whole range of scenarios, so will be working through the Tav replacement list in the coming days

Maybe using the money for both a Tav replacement and a Howson backup will make us a stronger squad overall in the long run.
 
I'd say tav is second only to an in form Jones in the irreplaceable stakes.

I would be gutted to see tav go so hope this rumour is a load of rubbish.

Our midfield looked light at times last season even with tav covering all that ground. I'd be concerned we might get swamped without him in there.

Possibly, but doing those deals now is going to be a massive undertaking. We’ve been after a striker for almost three months and still haven’t got one. Thinking you can just nip out and get all three midfielders, plus the defender and three strikers we still need - so seven deals to do - is surely madness, especially at this stage.
 
It does seem odd that he was at training yesterday and cleared out his locker last night. Surely he would have to go to Bournemouth or wherever first for medicals etc.
Fingers crossed this is nothing.
 
Leaning towards it not being true after other people have added context.

No training today anyway, definitely didn't sound like anything imminent on him from Wilder on Monday, and why would he wait till late at night to clear his locker even if he was leaving?

If he was sold, he'd leave with well wishes and wouldn't be sneaking off like a thief in the night.

why wouldnt he be replaced a big presumption to think he wont. Even if tav doesnt go i think we are still one short. If he goes then we need at least two new midfielders in. If he wants to go to little old bmuff let him go hes eminently replacable

"He cleared his locker" is a very odd thing to report. Not that he's leaving, which is what he would be telling teammates and staff. I wonder how much stuff he keeps in there?!

(not knocking you btw, just commenting on what you've been told)
 
If there's anything at in this we have options to cover his departure in the short term, even McNair and Dijksteel can operate in midfield if needed, but we will definitely miss Tav's workrate. No-one else provides that kind of energy, it will need looking at before the window shuts.
 
We are incredibly light in midfielder if this goes through - only three CMs on the books?

We will ideally need another three through the door.

In terms of potential I don't think McGree is far off Tav's level of ability but they're different types of player and we would need a like for like replacement for Tav imo.
 
also McGree is probably playing up front on Saturday. So if Tav leaves, it means Coburn or Boyd-Munce (or Akpom!) start, leaving us with even fewer options.

Will be interesting to see if McGree does play that no.10 role or whether he goes for Watmore and Forss. I suppose there's 3 possibilities if you assume Coburn doesn't play
1. McGree and Watmore
2. McGree and Forss
3. Forss and Watmore

I reckon Forss might be on the bench
