The Hot Weather Madness

IT IS CALLED SUMMER!!!!!!! AARRGGHH. If it was 14C people would be moaning it was cold. Ficking UK people.!
It's a bit different moaning about 14 degrees and it being crap (but not killing anyone), and comparing that to having 20% excess deaths for the month like we did in 1976 and 2003 heat waves.

The temperature record is probably going to eclipse the previous record, for two days in a row, and not only that it's going to be over 35 for most of England, it will catch plenty of people out and most of us don't have air con etc. It's the first time there's ever been a weather forecast predicting 40 degrees, and the first red extreme heat warning.

This is going to come at a time when ambulance and A&E waits are the highest they've ever been.

No harm in being concerned about the vulnerable.

We'll have wear all that gear for up to 12 hours, most of that period stood outside for hours on end & at times wearing green chemical suits when loading certain tankers

Plenty of refreshments mind, it is what it is
Aye, been there, running from scuds in overalls + NBC suit and gas mask in the midday Kuwait sun is no fun.

Didn't do it for long mind, after the first couple we just sat smoking, or if at night didn't even bother getting out of bed

Nah, wouldnt recommend that, dont you know smokings bad for you 😉

It's crap that you don't get adequate ventilation/ air con etc, can your boss not do anything about that? Have you acclimatised to it over the years?

Do you know any keen cyclists? You could maybe borrow one of those massive fans they use on their indoor trainers, mines like a helicopter taking off, might not do much for your presentation mind! I'm going to blast the dogs with mine as they really struggled with the last bad one, a couple of years ago (think that was the same one you're on about).

I've had to work outside in over 40 degree heat for a few months, it was beyond ridiculous.

People should be treating waitresses and kitchen staff better anyway, but no doubt you will still get some d*ckhead complainers.
Only so much the extraction fans can do, it just is what it is.

The way some of the media are going on though is ridiculous. Telling people to stay at home? I don't recall seeing anything like that on a plane ticket abroad to sunnier climates.

Will the fishshops and ice cream parlours be forced to close at seaside resorts to stop people standing in the heat queuing ...

Thought not, but thats peoples own choices i guess. Sometimes at Seaton you can be stood for over 45 minutes waiting. Imagine how hot its going to be behind those fryers!

I don't know whether we are just a more stupid society or its the Nanny state, or both? I remember 1976 it was sizzling hot for weeks. The only concern was for the flowers and plants. The tar on the roads was melting and an overpopulation of ladybirds. None of this continual safety warning stuff. On the trains now the announcer tells people to be careful when carrying hot drinks in case they slip. And in Kings Cross Station when it rains the announcer tells everyone to be careful because the ground may be wet and slippy. FFS. Kill Me Now.

Air con works abroad, should be mandatory in kitchens which can't handle it. If it's a one off then yeah, fair enough, but they should probably not even open if it's bad, but you shouldn't regularly have to work in that. Like I say though, after doing it for years you probably get used to it, to some degree.

When people go abroad they're going by choice, and have air con everywhere, and people still die of heatstroke abroad. Being on the beach in Spain/ Tenerife at 30 degrees is a bit different to being inland in an unprepared country, 10 degrees hotter.

I think the warnings are more aimed at the elderly/ those not in good health etc.

It's neither, there's nothing wrong with reminders about sensible precautions, it hopefully helps reduce the burden on emergency services. The 1976 heat waves saw a spike in death rates, so it wasn't just plants
With regards to safety warnings on trains etc it's to reduce the possibility of them being subject to legal action.

I think we're just more aware/ responsible/ clued up. There were around 2,000 excess deaths in 76 and 03 in the UK alone, if we can prevent that or warn against that, then why not?

It's likely to be 5 degrees hotter than 76, and break the UK temperature record, pretty much about as much of a one off as you can get. Like I said above, couple that with the longest ambulance and A&E waits on record and it's not a good combination. May as well at least warn about it.

I don't see how this compares to trains/ kings cross, but I suppose there they're just covering their arses.

….. with beaches and accessible sea and air conditioning and everywhere geared up and acclimatised to the weather and engineered to meet the demands of the heat. And generally you wouldn’t take 80 yr olds out of the U.K. and into that heat because….
In the U.K., the 80/90 yr olds etc are already here, and not acclimatised.

Same kit down a ships boiler room in the West Indies was fun, only 18 then though, would kill me in about 10 minutes now i'm in my 60s

Racecourses postponed meetings Monday and Tuesday because it’s too hot for the horses to run. Animal welfare may be better than human welfare!
