Champions League Final Matchday Thread

And Benzima wasn't even ahead of the last outfield player but because he was ahead of the GK he is offside. Who makes up these rules.
You need two players including the goalkeeper to be between you and the goal to be onside. It has been like that forever.

Ok disallowed because it wasn't a deliberate pass to benzema from a Liverpool player. Why would it ever be a deliberate pass to an opposition player the rule or interpretation is absolute tosh.
Exactly.

If a defender is deliberately passing the ball to an opposition striker then I dare say other rules are being broken.

Absolutely bizarre.

That's always been the rule.

Onside if you're not ahead of two opposition players.

Benzema was only behind one.

It's just rare that the goalkeeper isn't the last player.
Christ surely nobody needs that explaining!

Did you know you can be offside when you are not on the pitch? Fact.

It's about being deliberately played. A deflection, by definition isn't deliberate.

If you jump for a header to clear the ball and mis-time it so that the ball deflects behind you then that is deliberate - the ball might not go where you mean it but you played it deliberately.

Fabinho goes in with his right foot and it is deflected off his left knee.

Benzema is in an offside position.

Until the ball goes to him whatever else happens doesn't matter. It's just the last touch**

**the forward pass rather than the very last touch (probably)

Last two touches were Liverpool players.
If someone takes a shot which was going towards goal and it touches two opposition players on the way in, the player taking the shot still gets credited with the goal. It's the same principle. The pass would have reached Benzema, but it deflected off two Liverpool players on the way to him.

The interpretation of the rule is spot on, the question is whether it was a pass that was deflected or a tackle which was played into Benzema. If you want Liverpool to win you'll see it the first way, if you want Real to win you'll see it the second way. If you're a neutral, you'll see it as it is - almost impossible to work out either way, and you'll probably feel very sorry for the officials having to make a decision. Similar to the Watmore incident at Old Trafford.

Not quite. It doesn't need to include the keeper. It can be 2 outfield players.
Yes, but I'd say the confusion earlier in the thread stemmed from the fact that there was one outfield player between Benzema and the goal and usually it is one plus the goalie that means a player is onside.
I could definitely have worded/punctuated my reply better 😁

The Liverpool #3 clearly plays it back towards Benzema off his knee. The ball was going away from the goal before he played it. He might not have intended to play it back, but he clearly did, it wasn't a deflection, but it may have deflected off the goalie as well.

Clearly the VAR ruling was wrong.
