Ollie Robinson

You must think 90% of people at uni are absolute knobs then.

I was definitely one 🍺🍺
You must work with some very strange people if you think that 90% of people turn up for work like that and don't listen to warnings and get sacked.

Uni is different, you are not getting paid, your responsibility is only to yourself.

Spot on.
I did loads of all nighters at uni then slept through lectures.

Would I do it now? No, probably not. Because, funnily enough, I’ve grown up a bit from when I was 20.
You wouldnt do it now because youd probably be sacked from your job ? Not that you've grown up. At uni we were all like that - but being drunk regularly and missing lectures wasnt a suspendable offence from Uni fortunately.

He cannot be punished through the law due to the time elapsed.

Should he be punished at all, is there a point to it, what's had his behaviour been like since the tweet incidents?

I don't follow cricket but it seems odd that a governing body can retrospectively punish someone when the law cannot.

well they can make arbitrary and ethical decisions. Remember that the ECB have to welcome people to this country and arrange visits to other countries where this mans behaviour would be seen as an embarrassing slur on them. From an ethical perspective you can understand why this requires some form of address.

Think a few are jumping the gun a bit here, unless I'm missing something. He's been suspended pending an investigation. Not banned indefinitely.

Hopefully they don't drag their feet and reach a reasonable and balanced conclusion taking into account his age at the time and the remorse he's shown.

But they can't do nothing, the tweets were ridiculous and regardless of his age when he made them, he still has to take some responsibility for them. As he has done it must be said.

It's unfortunate they've been dragged up now, but it doesn't change the fact they happened and it needs to be made clear they were completely unacceptable and racism etc has consequences.

It's not just about a 19 year old idiot, it's about the message it sends if that behaviour is seen to be ignored or excused.

Hopefully a swift investigation and as others have said a very short ban and some raising awareness/community work would seem proportionate.

If it was such an ethical issue for the ECB, why not suspend him immediately? ie after day 1 of the test

or were his extra few wickets and 40 odd runs more important than their ethics?

I can bm. I read an article just now and he has been suspended whilst an investigation is carried out. That seems fair enough. Any sort of a ban should be based solely on that investigation taking into account the time elapsed.

Some might argue, very reasonably, that given it happened quite a while ago, the adverse publicity and a short suspension should be punishment enough.

because it was part way through a game and would damage the integrity and punish him prior to a full investigation which wouldn't be fair either

Yorkshire sacked him for going back to Kent for the night during games not sleeping and returning at 1am for the next days play on more than 1 occasion.
It's worth noting that Yorkshire didn't release any details so this is likely from his side. There may be more to it, than simply as speculated here, other associated issues that make this worse.
It does sort of support Rafiq's claim about the culture at Yorkshire during his time there though.
I guess that culture wasn't supported from management at Yorkshire, it evolved and they wanted to reverse it. Fair enough.

Not sure that Yorkshire took any action on his tweets though. As if they had, then The Sun wouldn't have been able to drag up his tweets last week. Rafiq's claim is that a racist culture (especially against Muslim's) was prevelant at the club even at the higher levels of management.

There is an enquiry taking place at Yorkshire into these claims at the moment, but they have not released any details - just banned Wisden from talking to any Yorkshire players.

Question for those that think that Robinson political persuasion and racism as an 18-20 year old should be unpunished because he was only a kid and therefore shouldn't be accountable. Shemima Begum...I guess you all feel she should be allowed back into the country with no punishment as long as she apologises for her 15 year old selfs life choices?

They are not remotely similar acts, don't be so silly.
I dont think anyone is saying dont punish the lad but maybe out of a negative they could do something positive and use this to highlight awareness on the issues and not just ban him and brush it under the carpet.

Depends what she's done but if she has sent some nasty/racist tweets then yeah, make her apologise and let her back in the England cricket squad, send her on intensive diversity training.
