Expanding the Riverside Stadium..

The overall average is bumped up because we usually always sold out when we played Man United or Liverpool but even in our last Premier League season there were games where we only had 27k.

I just hate how empty the stadium looks, especially when we're in the Championship.
‘Only 27k’ is a good crowd for our size of club, we are not a big city outfit, and depending on away fans represents well over 80% full.

I don’t think we are the only club with the problem of an empty looking stadium when not in the premier league.

But look at Bournemouth, their stadium was full but they still looked like a club on borrowed time in the premier league simply because their ground is so small.

Not really. I would be interested in seeing the median/mean age figures for our crowds in each League.
Buildings aren't cheap and you'll need more than one possible international to pay back the construction costs.
I don’t necessarily disagree with you but I kind of think we are making different points here so let’s leave it at that.

If we went up we would sell out most weeks but if we stayed up how lon would it be before we slipped away to high 20s again with a constant battle to avoid relegation every week and a few token wins to appease, remember the Southgate games watching us slowly getting worse from the European days with the fans drifting away.

the current size is fine and if the club wanted to do cheap deals and free tickets for kids they could easily do it right now, every empty seat is a wasted opportunity for the club, we have certainly been behind the curve in enticing new fans to the club with the big gap between season tickets abs walk ups.

Why the obsession with how full the stadium is?

Two seasons that were amongst the best in terms of football and atmosphere were 73/74 (average gate 22,000 in a 40k ground) and 86/87 where a large chunk of the ground was closed.

Is the current generation more concerned with image than the actual football on display?

The Sunderland approach was ultimately a spectacular failure. You can give away as many free tickets as you want but how do people then afford the second and third match. The Riverside Stadium when built was a massive upgrade on the capacity at Ayresome Park - it was a giant leap forward and many said it was over ambitious.
We only fill the away section in the Premier. It is more like 200 average in Championship 2000 in Premier. Boro do give free tickets to schoolkids and others doing Foundation courses etc.
We should have better pricing I agree but then I am hoping that we can get 15 000 + next season as a feelgood bounce after COVID. The club/Warnock are making big efforts at reaching out at present and it would be superb if they paid off. They would like people to get involved in ways to make the concourses more welcoming etc. They do want the Boro to feel like OUR club.

There isn't being enough done to entice new supporters. I should imagine they'll be a couple of extra thousand on the gate due to missing out on football for a year but no where close to filling the stadium. It's a real missed opportunity in my book. I feel like no one speaks for the match by match supporter either. Season ticket holders are well looked after (and rightly so) but there are thousands or supporters who can't attend regularly. They've been an after thought for years...Boro Pride was a winner. It showed an attempt to include everyone. Bring that back.

Also increasing the stadium capacity when we don't get close to filling this one...come on :ROFLMAO:

How much day reckon it’s going to cost?

Thinking small never gets you anywhere..

How many times in our history have averaged over 35,000 over the course of a season? I'd guess 5 MAX. We don't have the fan base for it, it makes no sense.

This might not make economic sense but I'd rather have a stadium slightly too small for demand than too big. Everyone would be desperate for a ticket, season ticket holders would always renew as they might not get chance again if they gave them up, the stadium would always be full so the atmosphere would be better, which adds to the demand for a ticket.

The opposites are all true when the stadium is too big.

It makes no sense not wanting to build the fan base or actively seeking to wipe out generations of fans. Too small for demand? a 15,000 seater stadium filled with 50-70 year old gold ticket holders!!

What are the numbers - would love to know how much it actually costs too build and maintain one seat in a sports arena.

It makes economic sense if you have little ambition and spending time in the lower reaches of the league and you'll find that demand will drop because of it.

Ayresome held 53,000 when I first went to the Boro, as they cut back the capacity and people couldn't get in for big games they lost that sprinkling of interest. That interest wouldn't be passed on to the next generation.

I couldn't believe Gibson took out seats to put a scoreboard in. Backward step to appease a minority of noisy fans it's been cut again due to ridiculous pressures from a TV company, now the TV cameras face the sun, why?

that's when you get generations of fans jumping ship.. everyone on Teesside should have Boro as their first club.. and that should spread out onto the surrounding areas. MFC does not just represent the small town of Middlesbrough it represents the larger Teesside/Cleveland/North Yorkshire area.

Perhaps a readjustment of the ticketing system and return of the "Pride" card might be beneficial?
Certainly the club couls look at enticing events to the ground like concerts. Perhaps Tees Valley could help pay for a roof on the stadium and use it as the Teesside Arena?(y)
