I work with some one who believes in “the flood”

I’m always amused when discussion about global warming and temperatures are discussed as being cataclysmic. Cataclysmic for us, humans.

the earth has been warmer much more than its ice ages, sea levels have been higher and species with a greater success than us have survived longer.

The flood narrative is in many religions, not that I think because it has taken place, rather it’s a useful story about sweeping out a group of people wrongdoing

I wouldn’t belittle anyone’s personal beliefs to be honest. If it gives them peace and comfort and helps them through life and it’s not doing harm to anyone else then I’m happy for them.
I agree, unless they come out with ridiculous comments like zorro's colleague.

Each to their own. Her thoughts on the world are her own and she is entitled to them just like you are to yours.

I think it’s poor form to ridicule to be honest... she has no proof it exists... you have no proof it didn’t

Of course it's not poor form. Come on, anyone with half a brain cell knows stories like Noah's Ark are a massive load of b***ks. It's akin to believing in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings FFS. If you do happen to believe all that, at least have the sense to remain silent about it unless you're discussing it with like-minded people. If not, prepare to have the urine extracted.

It’s the ark mate do You think all the worlds creatures/animals went on 2 by 2 aboard a large wooden boat...

Really ?

I never said what my belief’s are or are not... but I find it incredibly immature of a grown man to take the **** out of someone for what they want to believe.

seriously what harm does it do you if she does think the Ark is real?

as said above a cheery fair enough would have covered it but you have decided to try and get a cheap laugh out of it.

do you take the **** out of kids for believing in Santa?

or what about all those religions? Are they fair game because you have a different opinion
I can't prove vampires don't exist, that doesn't mean that they do.

The burden of proof is on the person asserting that - in this - the ark exists. If they cannot prove this then it stands to reason that the ark did not exist.

There is no burden of proof on anyone... last time I checked we all had free will to believe in anything we want to.

how about just getting on with your own life and not judge others

Not taking the **** out of anyone I was just surprised to see anyone taking a bible fable so literally.

Whilst the bible is considered, even by the catholic church as allegory, there really isn't much to suggest that a creator does not exist. The best science can do is the 4 forces, suggesting that a soul is not really possible as we would see it's interaction with the 4 known forces, we don't. And that really is the best science can do to disprove the existence of a creator that designed all we see.

I am happy being an atheist, but I certainly wouldn't discount, as foolish, the idea of a god. Noas ark..hmm well as told in the bible no, but mass flooding is almost certainly true.

Hitchens did say something quite interesting about religion in the Blind Watchmaker, he said that there is no reason why natural selection would favour the belief in a god, and he cannot explain why most of the planet believes. It does nothing to help survival so why?

'God doesn't exist' is a testable scientific hypothesis in the sense that, in theory, you could show it to be untrue by producing a god. 'God exists', as a statement, is not capable of refutation. You cannot disprove the hypothesis.

Not talking about religion

as I respect any ones faith and beliefs but sure the ark is meant metaphor for wisdom and being devout not a literal big wooden boat.

Doesn’t it have dimensions listed in the bible? Or is that just the ark of the covenant?

As some have said, the 'flood' did actually occur, due to rising sea levels. There's plenty of geological evidence and recordings in mesopotamia.

I worked night shifts with a guy years ago who believed every word of the bible was to be believed as it’s written. He thought Adam and Eve were 40ft tall, Noah was hundreds of years old and that he built an ark for two of every animal. He also refused to tell a lie. Once after he was asked by the manager why he failed to turn up for work, he told them he called into his mate’s house on the way in and joined them in working their way through a massive bowl of weed they had on the coffee table. He didn’t even get the sack.

Because people need hope and simple narratives that they can grasp.
