He was arrested, tried and sentenced in a little over 48 hours - that seems rather like a 'rush to judgement' to me, with no time for proper legal procedures, evidence gathering, witness interviews etc.
I saw the interview and there were no lawyers involved, it was just Maguire one on one with a reporter and it certainly didn't sound like he was coached.
As he describes it they were forcibly taken to a police station (when they had asked to be taken to a hospital because his little sister had apparently been drugged) where they were assaulted by unidentified men who later turned out to be undercover policemen. He says all he tried to do was run away and totally denies having tried to bribe the police.
I have to say that for whatever reason, I found his account plausible and I don't see where the police provided any corroborating evidence other than their statements, so it seems the court case came down to their word against his, with the judge siding with the police.
Incidentally, according to the BBC under Greek law, having appealed, Maguire's conviction is automatically quashed so he is no longer considered to have been guilty of an offence, until his appeal is heard.
