Boring Post - The best winter coat

Another shout for Berghaus, I have a Extrem Hydro Down Jacket bought when they had the outlet at Dalton Park for around £80 and I've never felt the cold in it. Even in Iceland at -16, great bang for your buck with Berghaus. There is a shop still at Gretna.

Get a Berghaus 3in1. You won't regret it, I had one and it got nicked at work. Replaced it with a North Face insulated bomber coat. It was nowhere near as warm or as versatile.

I have to say 135 quid seems a steal as well. I'm sure I paid about 180 for mine and that had a chunk of money off.

I've had a North Face 3-in-1 for a few years and it has been superb. Can't fault it.

It was in a sale reduced from £200 ish to £150 ish, money very well spent.

Just upgraded to a Patagonia, see if it's anywhere near as good.

I bought the Craghopper Aquadry before a trip to Iceland and can thoroughly recommend it.

It's got a removable lining which is a benefit as you can wear that separately around the house and it means without the lining it's a good waterproof coat for autumn and spring without it being too hot.

As Muttley shows some good deals on at the minute.

It gets down to minus 20 (with a real feel down as low as minus 40 sometimes) here so I treated myself to a decent down coat as a normal coat doesn't cut it in those temperatures.

It seems half of Chicago wears Canada Goose so I looked elsewhere and stumbled across Fjallraven coats. The one I got wasn't cheap but was half the price of the CG equivalent and it's excellent. They're a bit outside your stated budget, but now people are suggesting more expensive options I thought I'd give the brand my endorsement.

Mine is similar. It’s mint. Honestly warm as phuck.
I'm not going to lie.. I came into a bit of money a few years ago.. 100s of pounds.. flash harry I lived a life of excess.. I bought a round even

It soon became clear that I needed to invest.. and no smarter investment was after a trip to go outdoors.. I was looking to change my life for the better I spoke to a chap in the trainers department and he introduced me to the greatest trainer that has ever existed the MT101 I bought them a size bigger as I was keen on getting some miles in.. going to the gym and doing a tough mudder.. I seem to remember them being under £50 an absolute bargain.. people talk of aspirational trainers.. these actually did change my life.. I became an absolute machine: crossfit, cross country, cross words backed up with a swift one two.. safe hands!

I strolled over to the till quite triumphant in my soon to be purchase.. but I was rich now.. both monetarily, physically and spiritually.. I didn't want to feel the cold anymore..

I heard RAB were the big daddies of coats.. so went over to buy the all singing all dancing warm maker.. fit for scaling Everest.. again a rather informed chap told me of my errors and pointed me in the direction of a cheaper yet much more stylish and technically superior berghaus winter coat.. I STILL HAVE IT NOW and have not felt the cold since.. its probably made me a bit soft when it comes to the colder weather to be honest.

Might be pretty tough.. I have a habit of going viral on here such is my overwhelming influence. Probably a good time to buy stock in go outdoors to make a quick buck before Xmas. Always happy to chat to mooners IRL both in my expensive everlasting warm gear..or in my Uber cool Vinted get ups!

My daughter bought me a winter coat 2 years ago. I won’t take it off now until about April.
It seems to have the feathers from about 100 ducks, and pockets I haven’t found yet.
My best coat ever.
I bought one similar 15 years ago from TK Maxx and it's still going strong.

Are they any good? Not a terrible price to be honest, given he could probably afford one 20x that price. :)

I would presume that they must be ok, because he could indeed wear a different coat each day and it wouldn't make a massive dent in the savings he'll have banked from his playing career.

I do a lot of hiking. In the uk avoid anything made with feather or down, it will be warmer but it is meant for cold yet dry environments, we have cold and wet so it's not the best option.

Once it gets wet, it loses its insulating properties and has to be dried out properly which takes a long time and risks damage.

Waterproof stuff is measured by how much water it can resist and it will eventually let stuff in so it's not a case of "it's waterproof, it's fine!" And water resistance often degrades over time too.

Artificial insulation will be slightly less warm, but will keep you warm if it gets wet and dries off easily, and more suitable to wet environments like ours.

If you're going to spend a few quid on a coat - it's best to check where it's made. For e.g. Moose Knuckles have used production facilities in Vietnam. Not what you want if you're paying £500+ for a coat.

Of course, much cheaper offerings will be likely made in Asia which is fine. The quality can still be fairly decent. But pay £100-£200 for them - not £500-£1000.
