What are everyones thoughts on how the tracker is going to perform over the winter?

The tracker has, from MSE conversations, been below price cap historically in previous years even when it snowed. It was below price cap all of Jan and Feb when it was the coldest weather, so even if the savings are less; it should still be savings.

Worst case you can come off it and hop on to price cap tariff but I think if it did go above it, I'd ride it out because of the 9 month limit on rejoining. Price cap is expected to remain largely static next 12 months so is a fairly known quantity bar any massive curveballs, so tracker should be cheaper

theres a whatsapp 'channel'. by not using our oven for an hour we saved 3p.

not including the Ā£40 indian takeaway we had delivered instead.
Reminds me of when I walked all over Benidorm years ago trying to find the cheapest bottle of vodka. Managed to save 0.5 euros by getting one for 9.50 euros. Was thirsty by then so went in a bar for a pint. When the waitress came to serve me I payed for the drink then said ā€œkeep the changeā€ then realised what I had just done!

As for if you'd save money, it's still cheaper than price cap for both unit rate and standing charge so definitely worth doing.

Is there a formula for calculating what i would have paid if i'd been on the tracker for year based on my consumption?

Standing charges aren't fixed nationally, they may be on price cap tariffs but it's probably a maximum. Realistically the SC variations won't have a huge difference, couple of pounds a year max

Eg northern tariffs on price cap shows 54.7 and 28.2p for elec and gas yet with octo tracker I pay 48.29 a day elec and 26.84 gas,

Not an easy formula but you could work it out using the 365 day average rates - but that won't factor in nuances like using more elec when it's cheaper, using less gas when expensive etc but you'd have a rough idea. You can make an easy excel sheet with standing charges, unit rates etc and work out what average monthly bill would be etc, if you're no good with excel I have one saved somewhere

Power saving session tonight you can opt in for. 5pm until 6.30pm.

I updated the wife, she looked bored of me šŸ¤£

my missus is not going to be impressed when she gets home. no lights on, everything off. she'll go fooking mental.

edit. placated her with chips & mushy peas from the chippy. octopus savings, Ā£1. cost of placation, Ā£13.

Electricity is creeping up quickly, over 25p tomorrow and getting close to the cap rate....
Don't panic as they say...
Yep exactly this

2023 hasn't seen a day over the cap rate
2022 has a couple of days end of the year

I'd expect some days if we get now or whatever to breach it but if you switch away as soon as that happens, then you're lobbing away savings on potentially the next 9 months for the sake of a few p a unit

Exactly, I've probably saved over Ā£700 this year plus it's expected the cap will rise in January by 5%.
Sit on your hands,don't switch

They're a bit like Amazon too in that a lot of their success comes from the data platform they use, Kraken. Lot of other suppliers are therefore their customers also, generating them more cash. Plus they do solar, heat pumps etc

Does the customer gain anything from taking part in one of these sessions, or is the reward in not paying so much for that hour and a half ?

You get points depending on how much less you use compared to your average. It's not going to change your life, just a way to try and lighten peak load

What are majority of people on Agile or Tracker? Just took the plunge and bought a EV, working out if Agile or Go will be best (whether the car arrives!!) #maths

Tracker is better generally unless you can load shift majority of your usage into the night when agile is cheaper, or if you have solar and battery use when agile is pricy

British gas gave cash returns as a % of what you saved compared to your average. not sure how it was calculated. Points with octopus which I presume will convert to money off the bill at some point.

I've stayed on tracker. even with a small battery we use electricity at such peak times it saves over planning/ thinking.

800 octopoints to a quid I think

Twitter staff I've seen giving out a few thousand points to funny pictures etc

Think you get 500 points for a refwrral

Then you get points for the savings sessions.

Spin the wheel prizes also in points

At a guess, it's cos you gotta manually convert them to bill credit and a small percent of people will o variably never click on that section so save a little bit of money šŸ˜‚
