Ever wondered why we sing this ? Why would geordies go to Rome and then sing about supporting Boro ? Surely it should be all the smoggies went to Rome ?
Seems a bit strange

& then the Pope asks who the boro are but then knows we play in red & white and are dynamite, & will support them ever more or is it the geordies that are saying that?Ever wondered why we sing this ? That would assume a Mackem using a map. We need to be somewhat realistic.Well there was never any point is suggesting that all the Mackems went to Rome.
No, it's "and this is what he said"I always interpreted it as :
All the Geordies went to Rome, just to see the pope
<repeat><repeat>
And this is what they said
Like the OP said - it doesn't make sense that way .. it makes more sense the Geordies going to see the Pope seeking Divine Guidance on who this team called the Boro are.No, it's "and this is what he said"
The song is "Who's that team we call the Boro..." etc.
The little intro about the Geordies going to Rome to see the Pope, and their dismay upon discovering that he's actually a Boro fan is really only there to ensure that everyone starts to sing the main song at the same time. It isn't really part of the song
It does make sense. The Geordies went to Rome, got to meet the pope and the pope said to them:-Like the OP said - it doesn't make sense that way .. it makes more sense the Geordies going to see the Pope seeking Divine Guidance on who this team called the Boro are.
Not that any Footy song makes sense .. I always chuckle when I hear fans from the bottom team in the EFL are singing "We're the finest team in football the world has ever seen" .. Well, no .. you're Fat Last! Statistically you're the WORST ....
I can remember it being sung in the mid-eighties at Ayresome, but I'm sure it's probably older. Some of the board 'elders' will probably confirm.I'd always just presumed it came about when we were going to Rome for the UEFA Cup and knocked out Roma.
Which I thought made it self-explanatory.
Was it sang before that?
