You can already see how carrick wants his side to play.

Wilder had "his" system, and when it didn't work .....it didn't work.

Someone said a few months back we got Wilders first few years at Sheff Utd last season, and his last season there this season at Boro.

When his system was sussed, or players confidence went, it was next to useless. At least with a back 4 things can be switched to a 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1 mid game pretty easily. Wilders system depended on the 3 CBs and wing backs which certainly looked as though a lot of players struggled to adapt.

Anyhow, in the past and certainly switching to the back 4 we look a better, happier team. Onwards and upwards!

He didn’t want to be here and he slagged off our players. He left pretty much the same way as he did here. Like a fart in a lift.

It’s about scoring the first goal. Last night was pretty poor until we scored, let’s be honest, but after the goal had gone in we started to play some decent stuff. We stood up to their 20mins of pressure at start of the second half well and then hit them with a sucker punch straight after the equaliser.

It’s always been about keeping the ball out of our net. We have some quality in the squad but it means little if the defenders aren’t marking up or heading it out, or there are huge open spaces in the midfield for the opposition to saunter through.

Last night was a positive one for us because Lenihan and Fry stood up to everything thrown at them, and Hackney is blocking off space and using possession really well. Steffen was very good, his passing is ridiculous. Akpom was excellent. I can’t believe where his form has come from but fair play to him, he looks absolutely class and full of confidence.

The key now is consistency. We’ve shown some good flashes, right across the season. We need to nail down this shape and make ourselves hard to beat. I like how involved Carrick is. He’s low-key but fully immersed in the game and we could probably do with a calm head running the team for a change.

Tightening up and scoring the first goal is so important. There’s no reason we can’t do this and start moving up the table.

It was a bold move from carrick to come straight in and rip up the 5 at the back a system this side has almost exclusively played for some time now through various managers.

But you can see already how he wants his side to play with close short passes no more hoof ball and instead to play through the opposition.

He wants players who are comfortable on the ball and he’s prepared to look deep into our squad to find them. Players who show for it and want to take their man on.

Of course it’s early days but we could have really scored 4 ( Giles one on one miss) goals away from Home.

so yes Really encouraging signs bring on Bristol c.
Steffen/Roberts

Smith/Dijksteel
Fry/McNair
Lenihan/Clarke
Giles/Bola

Jones/Watmore
Howson/Crooks
Hackney/Mowett
McGree/Boyd-Munce

Akpom/Hoppe
Forss/Muniz

You can already see five or six areas where he’d probably like to improve on

Consistency is the big one

Observations:
- playing through the thirds, we aren't playing possession for possession sake, but we are possessing with purpose. We are trying to create space for the man on the ball and space between the opposition lines with midfield dropping to 1-2 with CBs, and forwards dropping to 1-2 with midfielders. Pulling opposition players out of their lines
- we are being more direct in transition, when we turn the ball over we are looking to get forward quickly and exploit the opposition not being in defensive shape
- we're moving the ball with a bit more pace and purpose, less lazy passes across the back
- fullbacks not expected to be as high up the pitch as our wingbacks were, not sure where Giles will fit into this long term.
- I'd expect to see an intelligent athletic CM in january to fit this team. Someone who can burst forward with a third man run
- out of possession, he's been a bit unlucky with the goals we have conceded, and probably a bit annoyed at the left hand side, again that could be an area to look at, maybe even Clarke at LB?

I'm not getting carried away yet. We had more luck last night than in pretty much all of Wilder's games this season.
You make your own luck in games. Our bad luck can be broken down to us throwing players forward all the time with no real game plan behind it other than "we want to f****** press". Carrick and Leo tried to play more to our strengths and we've had our two luckiest games (Wigan and Hull) since those changes were made.

the biggest difference is the energy and mobility hackney gives instead of mowatt. howson and hackney seem to have developed a good partnership as does fry and lenihan. We could do with a good strike partner for akpoms good work

Exactly that’s why I started this thread as you say it was very apparent wasn’t it how more expressive we were and that this was intentional you could see carricks influence.

I think Carrick has looked at this league and seen how average at best most teams are. And we have decent players. We should be able to find a way to get something from most games.

A win, 3 points and confidence increasing. It's early days and Carrick can improve this squad. Admittedly, Hull were very poor and arguably we could have won by more. I thought the way we started the second half was strange. Stood off the opposition, invited pressure and barely posed a threat. Thank goodness we woke up when the inevitable equaliser happened.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is out of contract at Sheffield in the summer and must surely be worth a tinkle.

I'd have thought Bola as LB, but Clarke could work as well, especially if they want to do that thing they did last night where Smith, Fry and Lenihan shifted into a back 3 when Giles went forward.

You could use Fry, Lenihan and Clarke (or Bola) to do something similar to allow Jones or Dijksteel to play RB and still get forwards.

He wants his teams to play football

Night and day this.

With youth being used as well and with Willis to break through.

Great to see

Delighted with the first half, these look terrible mind, obviously you can only beat what's in front of you. Can't remember when I enjoyed a first half as much as that, desperate for a second goal though.
