Yorkshire Salad

I picked up another garnish for roast beef and yorkshires from a Sheffield lass. Slice up an onion, scald it with boiling water, leave to stand for a few minutes then pour off the water (I use the water as a base for my gravy) steep in malt vinegar.

Been looking up Yorkshire salad recipes after thinking I'd made a fool of myself 😁 Seems like there's all sorts of variation on ingredients and a lot of argument on what's proper Yorkshire salad. Some do have mint in though 😗 One recipe has milk in 🤮

For me the vital ingredient other than the vinegar obvs (which must be malt vinegar) is the cucumber - king of the salad vegetables.
.
I have a recipe in a Chinese book for smashed cucumber which is a similar thing but using shaoshing vinegar and garlic.

My mate who's married to a Chinese lass mentioned the very same thing today.

Me Nannas was scallions, lettuce, onion. Sometimes a bit of cucumber, sugar and a dash of mint in vinegar
Ours was all that apart from the cucumber. Try as I might, I've got nowhere near achieving the same as Mam's/Nanna's. Perhaps something to do with old taste buds corrupted by alcohol and tobacco.....

Yep, I'll definitely have a try of that- Thanks BB :)

I'm very Yorkshire (York, Leeds, Sheff) and haven't heard of Yorkshire salad.

A very Sheffield thing for me was Yorkshire Puds and gravy as a starter before the main Sunday lunch. And then Yorkshires with the lunch too

Another one here that had Yorkshire pudding with gravy as a starter .... before sunday lunch... basket load of puds which were also put out with the main course ..... seems to have dies that ... is it a Durham thing?

Shaoxing is rice wine, not vinegar.

Cucumber!! 🥒😲

It tastes just enough to be unpleasant, but not quite enough to be worth picking out of things! Wretched stuff 🤣

I think Yorkshire puddings were originally always eaten as a separate entity/starter and it just gradually crept into the main course. That's what i was always told anyway
