Southgate's sacking was bad timing.

He should've been sent packing the moment the FT whistle went away to Hull in which we lost 2-1 after leading 1-0 in the 79th minute...to give us any chance whatsoever of staying up.

Then to sack him when we were a small amount of points off top spot, in The Championship, was bonkers...especially when it was at the expense of a complete and utter idiot.
Yes we once again ( as with Agnew) were seemingly resigned to relegation in February.

As most know, I was in the camp that felt he was harshly treated and he seemed set up to inevitably fail, while the budgets, wages of the high earners were replaced with inferior alternatives, Arca, Euell, Dong Gook Lee followed by Hoyte, Aliadiere, Shawky, Mido, Alves, O’Neil. Ok we had Huth and Woody but the squad was so inferior to before, Sir Gareth took the blame for something he had little control over at the time, but he had brownie points because of his playing days. I said then he would go on to manage England and was royally laughed at.

However, I would not want him to endure a second spell here, he deserves better, I’d be surprised if after England he takes a club role as manager anywhere. I see him stepping up into an FA ambassadorial role of some type myself, we’ll see.

Carrick is in post, has my full backing no matter what the season brings, he isn’t Head of Football, just the Head Coach trying to blend a lot of projects he has been given, hopefully he has some magic beans and knows how to make a silk purse.
Southgate bought all those players. He had money to spend and he spent it poorly. Even then not being as good as a team that reached the UEFA Cup final is not the same as a team that was relegated without a whimper. He had the resources to keep us in the PL but he didn't have the ability. He struggled at first and said "judge me on my 3rd season" and he got relegated. His time with us was catastrophic and we have never recovered.

I would agree with this.

But I do believe someone can improve in 14 years.

I am not stopping you believe what you want to believe. Southgate publicly stated he did not want to sign Alves for example. I suppose Karanka‘s gifts were all his choices too? Downing himself said Karanka didn’t want him. They were signed whilst he was Head Coach, not manager. He will of course been involved in discussions and contractually obliged to sign off on all deals, but in a cabinet style selection process at the time, I am sure someone else had much more involvement, but people prefer to blame the Manager/Head Coach than the Hierarchy because of 1986-2006.

Looks like these results are pretty comprehensive.

2nd greatest England manager of all time according to @BoroMart but the vast majority of fans don't want him at the club he started his career.

If we re ran this poll with Michael Vs Klopp, Potch, Pep, Tuchel, Howe, Potter, Clark etc would the results be the same? Interesting indeed.

Of those mentioned I'd take Klopp and Pep at this moment in time. No one else. Which Clark do you mean? Frank?

Clapping like a seal on the touchline.
Interview after every defeat "we'll learn from this...back on the training pitch etc"

Truly great player for us, and i will always hold him as a real Boro great. But when he had to actually become the coach/manager when the great players had left, he was found wanting.
Replaced great players with prospects and that pretty much failed.

He's been excellent with England no doubt, but as a day to day manager? I have my doubts.

I don’t really rate Southgate so no, I wouldn’t. I think Southgate is fantastic at building a good atmosphere and unity among his players but tactically I think he’s pretty poor, he also seems to make a lot of poor decisions regarding substitutions. I think Carrick still needs to improve a lot but I’ve got faith he’ll come good as long as he’s given the time to do it, he’s clearly got a brilliant footballing brain

I have the same doubts, but I'd be interested to see it. Not as if Pep and Klopp are actually available to us. After Carrick it'll probably be Woodgate again unless Southgate fancies it.

If tomorrow Gareth said he wanted to manage Boro would you take him over Carrick?
I wouldn't want to just chuck Carrick in the bin.. it's hypothetical but Carrick is doing well and he's still learning his trade.

If Carrick left or went on to pastures new and Southgate was an option, I would 100% take that in the championship and in the premier league. He's a class act and a very good manager.. excellent man manager.

I would have stuck with him over Strachan and at the very least backed him for the full season.. his failings were down to recruitment, we had our hands tied. Also as England manager he's been terrific.. one of our best if not THE best.

He could walk into any prem side and do a job there.. personally I think the big mega bucks will come calling £5m a year as England manager compared with..

Roberto Mancini | Saudi Arabia | €30 million per year - expected Jun 30, 2027
Pep Guardiola | Manchester City | €23 million per year
Steven Gerrard | Al Ettifaq | €17.7 million per year
Diego Simeone | Atletico Madrid | €15 million per year
Thomas Tuchel | Bayern Munich | €12 million per year
Mauricio Pochettino | Chelsea | €11 million per year
Jurgen Klopp | Liverpool | €10.5 million per year
Erik ten Hag | Manchester United | €10.5 million per year
Jorge Jesus | Al Hilal | €10 million per year
Max Allegri | Juventus | €9 million per year

If he steps down next year.. he'll be 54 and able to treble his wages without flinching for a Saudi Pro League team.. then at least doubling that again for the national Saudi national job.

I'd bet you a handshake that no premier League team in the top 12 the prior season will come in for Southgate.

Infact I don't think any premier League team will.

This is my team now judge me on my team

Remember that one.

As for alves and his signing he was more than happy to take credit when we signed him so either he was lieing before we signed him or he was after.

I don't think he'll take a pay cut.. and there's no real need for him to stay in England and do what he has already done.. that £5m a year zone looks pretty familiar and he may want to take his chances further up if a long term manager moves aside.

Pep Guardiola
Manchester City
£19.5 million

Jurgen Klopp

Roy Hodgson
Crystal Palace

Unai Emery
Aston Villa
£4 million

Sean Dyche
Everton

Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham Hotspur
£3 million

David Moyes
West Ham United
£3 million

Marco Silva

I could see him taking up a role in Saudi.. very much so.. like a director of football overseeing the grassroots and talent identification pathways for the national team. He could do the job in his sleep..

Name me an ex-England manager that walked into a top prem management job when they left....

It's the nature of the job, it's a really really hard job, that takes it's toll on managers, and generally tarnishes them regardless how they do.

It's not really that interesting, it's a loaded question.

"Would you sack Carrick to appoint Southgate?", Carrick's still very popular amongst fans, and rightly so, sacking him being part of the equation is obviously going to put people off.

Comparing Southgate to Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp is just daft.

I wouldn't sack Carrick for any of the others either though, for what it's worth.
