Hypothetically, if Carrick was sacked this season and Southgate said he'd do it after the Euros (Woody as caretaker until then), yeah why not, might be interesting to see. I'd have no doubt at all it would end in tears after 18 months but that happens with all our managers anyway.

Imagine he got us promoted though - all the wrongs finally righted!

It's not like we're a top club that can have our pick of managers. If we were without a manager and he was free I'd give him a go but I would have fairly low expectations. I like him as a person and happy to see us associated with him but I'm not sure he'd ever be a successful club manager.

I wouldn't expect him to get a job at a top club competing for trophies when he leaves England. Chelsea will probably give him a go but he'll only last 6 months before they are looking elsewhere.

he's a championship manager imo and would get found out in the prem. Obviously would never have him over Carrick atm but if Carrick goes I'm sure the club would, and have in the past, interview worse candidates

I think he’s learning but Im not sure about others but I still see the same issues with his time at England that we saw at the boro.

Subs usage and timings being a real big one.

bit of a daft question that mate

It's just a question, there are some on here who really rate Gareth and shout down anyone who disagrees, so let's put it to the vote. Would you have him here over Carrick?

If the same question was asked about some other managers the results would no doubt change.

As most know, I was in the camp that felt he was harshly treated and he seemed set up to inevitably fail, while the budgets, wages of the high earners were replaced with inferior alternatives, Arca, Euell, Dong Gook Lee followed by Hoyte, Aliadiere, Shawky, Mido, Alves, O’Neil. Ok we had Huth and Woody but the squad was so inferior to before, Sir Gareth took the blame for something he had little control over at the time, but he had brownie points because of his playing days. I said then he would go on to manage England and was royally laughed at.

However, I would not want him to endure a second spell here, he deserves better, I’d be surprised if after England he takes a club role as manager anywhere. I see him stepping up into an FA ambassadorial role of some type myself, we’ll see.

Carrick is in post, has my full backing no matter what the season brings, he isn’t Head of Football, just the Head Coach trying to blend a lot of projects he has been given, hopefully he has some magic beans and knows how to make a silk purse.

It's a simple question col would you rather have Gareth or Michael managing the club. I mean the quiet majority is definitely speaking here against the vocal minority.

And this is despite Boro having the worst start to a season in forever (or last season 😂).

I’ve answered the question, cast vote and given an explanation as to why, despite your questions hugely implausible nature. I really don’t see what you are not understanding tbf 🤷‍♂️

Carrick hasn't been amazing this season but he's got a limited hand

Southgate can be questionable but has the pick of English talent

Voted carrick

Its not quite so simple. I don't want us to sack Carrick and I want to see how he does and if he can turn it around.

FWIW I thought Southgate was terrible first time round and thought our relegation was as much his making as anyone else's, but it was 14 years ago and I think he's done quite well for England in the meantime, relative to all the other guys who've had a go.

Ok well when you vote don't think of it as sacking Carrick think of it would you prefer to have Carrick or Southgate as manager . 👍

Well, ok, but your OP is actually just asking if I'd have Southgate back (presumably ever) and the basic answer to that is yes.

I'd like to think Carrick will prove himself to be a better manager than him however, by achieving promotion with Boro and then going on to win the World Cup with England.

Oh, further to my confidence in stating Southgate would be a future England manager during his tenure at Boro, I would like it on record that I believe Carrick will become England manager in the future too. I might even have a wager on it, That’ll be all for now. 😎

Southgate's sacking was bad timing.

He should've been sent packing the moment the FT whistle went away to Hull in which we lost 2-1 after leading 1-0 in the 79th minute...to give us any chance whatsoever of staying up.

Then to sack him when we were a small amount of points off top spot, in The Championship, was bonkers...especially when it was at the expense of a complete and utter idiot.
