Worst Boro player/manager/chairman inteviews?

Wilder always came across as a bit cringeworthy tbh. Doesn't even matter what he was saying it was... just... cringeworthy.

Also back during the McClaren years, SMAC overused the word "magnificent" when describing our performances, even though many weren't.

And of course there was Stewart Downing who loved to say "obviously" a lot, often three or four times in one sentence.

Honourable non-Boro mention.. Jamie Carragher, the cringey cnut. He can't get through a commentary without saying "it really is" about 12 times a match.
The phrase Stewie overuses is "like I say..."

McClaren’s faux-Dutch accent is a real thing though, in the sense that it affects lots of people who move to different countries to work and adopt the local accent and speech pattern in an attempt to fit in with the local people and/or colleagues. It’s most likely to be an unconscious or subconscious thing.

People take the p*ss as if he was doing it to make himself sound more interesting and intelligent but actually he was most likely doing it naturally and quite probably unconsciously. But I suppose that’s a much more boring answer than just taking the p*ss out of someone instead.

I was at a fan forum & we were going through a run of conceding late goals, turning wins into draws & draws into defeats, and someone asked Southgate whether fitness could be an issue.

He probably thought it was a stupid question, probably all the goals were different, from different play, parts of the field, whatever but his answer was:
"If the players were fitter, they'd just run round more during the game and so would be just as tired in the last 5 minutes of the game as they are now."

That answer makes me shake my head as much now as when he gave it.

It's a good post this, as I'm sure some of our fans are more bothered about what's said in press conferences than what's happening on the pitch.

The fact that McClaren get's mentioned on here, and some of the vitriol directred towards him was really shocking, simply because he overused the word "magnificent". This was during the most successful period we've ever seen and you had fans demanding we get rid of him because they didn't like his press conferences.

Vitriol for using the word 'magnificent' ??? Bit of an overreaction there me thinks (if your post was aimed at me).

For the record I loved SMACs time at Boro, he gave us our best ever years that'll never be repeated, but we also had our fair share of dour performances at times (which all managers go through now and then, not just SMAC). He did get flack at times, but no more than what Carrick has had in two or three spells this season, or some of the managers that recently preceded him had. If we had lost to Norwich and QPR, I'm sure someone somewhere would be contemplating throwing their season ticket at MC.

But those spewing vitriol are a minority, and always have been so its wasted energy to get worked up over manager criticism, past or present.

I thought Steve’s accent was magnificent

It wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at the dogs abuse McClaren got from certain sections of our fanbase during his time, based on nothing more than saying "magnificent" or having his teeth done.

The difference between his flack and Carrick's flack is that we were competing at the top half of the PL, and getting to a European cup final - yet it wasn't good enough for sections of our fanbase.

Strachan for me, I remember having Tees on in the car on the way home and Ali was almost fuming with him, its rare that Ali was lost for words and angry on the radio.
This ^^ I remember exactly where on the A19 I was taking the owld feller home from the match, it was disgusting, not just the drugs ‘joke’ but the contemptible was he spoke to the interviewer.

If I recall correctly didn't Strachan once say he was going to go home and hang himself when the interviewer asked him how he was feeling after a defeat? Totally inappropriate attempt at humour and not a good listen tbh.

Remember when Steve Mc went to work in Holland and he adopted a faux Dutch accent? He would use this to cringing effect when pronouncing words with an exaggerated 'Schh' His logic was that the fans would understand him better! He ended up being called Shteve Maclaren! haha.
I loved that! It was the bit when he said something like 'we are, how do you say, underdogssshhhh'.

Steve, you're from Yorkshire FFS!

I'm not saying that McClaren was wrong with his sentiments, but as a PR manoeuvre it was not brilliant to say that they were trying to educate the crowd.

When Gibson said 'We want to smash the league next year'

I don't think there was anything wrong with him saying that, but it certainly became a stick to beat him with over the course of subsequent seasons.

I've had a few arguments over the years with fans who insist that this constituted a promise or a guarantee that we would win the league.

I agree it's not the same as saying 'We will smash the league'.

But he should never have said anything close to 'smash the league'. Not in any sentence.
