Woodgate remaining in some capacity

Pretty hard to imagine it going much better though?
So, would you advocate we make no player changes in the summer and hopefully just re-loan the existing squad players and go with the exact same people? I find it easy to imagine it going better, it wasn’t long ago we were outplayed at the Riverside, there is always room to improve, but like i said, attempting to do so can also make things worse, you just never know till you try, it doesn’t stop people and clubs trying though.

The U12 from last season/ this season are an excellent bunch. Potentially a couple of real gems in there
Good point, these are the U 15’s now. Played at Redcar the other night against Blackburn. Got beat 2-1 but there are a couple of England internationals in that Boro group. Ably guided by Grant. Futures bright

But that’s next season. You said it could be going even better right now. I’m just asking how?

There is always someone else of course there is. Having said that for the Club to make what was a pretty bold decision to bring him back to the Club in a coaching capacity it shows that they knew that he would continue to add value despite his failure as a manager. Only insiders would know that, his relationship with the players and his standing in the Club with no bridges burnt anywhere with except the fans ( based on very poor results). Hopefully what he is doing behind the scenes is helping to mend those bridges with us.
I agree (mostly), Whatever anyone thinks of Woody, only those closely working with him will know what he brings to the table. I think it was not only a bold decision bringing him back, but pairing him with Carrick was too. Woody is clearly well thought of by the hierarchy, and like I say, maybe just maybe he is back out of some sense of honour, who knows 🤷‍♂️ as I do think he was always going to struggle with what he had to coach.

I was happy with Carricks appointment, less so with Woody’s. However, my doubts have been set to one side, a year ago we were all chuffed with Wilder remember, lets see how time progresses, but the signs are clearly very positive and we are all behind all the coaching staff and players at present and enjoying what we are seeing on the pitch.

Well he won a trophy (in fact he won them the trophy) with them so it could be said it wasn’t a bad decision.
Leave the club you supported as a boy, town you lived in whole life, owned a season ticket and whole family supported, to win a League Cup with a fellow mid-table side, and miss the chance to win the FA Cup with your own club? Well, I guess football means different things to different people.

I suppose what makes it worse is that Woody “seemed” to be a fan like the rest of us, the Spurs move was what made me think he’s just another mercenary professional footballer (which to be fair the vast majority of them are). I’d like him to clarify it if I’m honest, though I suspect he never will.

I never had faith in him to make it as a manager but I did say he could be a good number 2 somewhere. Didn’t think it would be here, so the fact he’s shown the humility to do that should be applauded.

I do have pretty fixed opinions on this, but now is not the time for them.

What we're doing has worked brilliantly and the turn around in form is nothing short of spectacular.

Time to concentrate on results and enjoy the football.

Of course it’s different for a player than us fans. For them it is a career.

Well if you look at the Stoke, WBA, Sunderland games etc, could they have gone better? We have games to play, will we always be perfect and win every one? of course not. I also said things could be made worse remember. Football is about decisions, pre planned, or in the moment, how anyone reacts to situations, it is a part of what makes football so great, nothing is black and white.

Your question of ‘how‘ is unanswerable, as any decision or change can have a beneficial, negative or irrelevant impact, until its made, you can never be sure. How many thought playing Ramsay against Reading was a positive at the time? I think you are looking for a response that I can’t give, nobody can with certainty.

Yes, I mean it was 15 years ago and I was 15 years younger, but one of the reasons I was so endeared to Woody at the time was that back in 2007 it felt like he was just one of us on the pitch. Probably naive to think so, but that’s also why I now don’t think he is purely here “for the good of the club”, he’s here to rebuild his career and is (understandably) exploiting the good relationship he has with Gibson etc to do so.

I do think it is naive to think a premier league professional thinks about a club more than money to be honest I mean Im a Boro fan through and through but if another offered me more money and a chance to win a trophy then I would move - for the future of the family as much as anything.

Well I don’t know how much more they paid him. Spurs weren’t the club they are now at the time, they were more like Everton. But he had a chance to win an FA Cup here. In fact, we might have won the bloody thing if he’d stayed.

He moved to Spurs who were in Europe in the UEFA Cup for one.

There was so much bitterness, sarcasm and vitriol flying about. In the same way that Jonathan Woodgate has learned and grown maybe there is also a lesson to reflect on

What are you on about?
Some people have met and formed an opinion about Woodgate. that’s the world we live in. Some people really dislike him.
It’s not a ‘one of our own’ cult you know.

As for the footy - he did a rubbish job as manager and seems to be doing a good job now.

Agree with that wholeheartedly - a very brave move which, to the decision makers credit, has gone very well indeed.

Agree. I think what he has already done behind the scenes has endeared him to many supporters. Long may it continue.

I'd say they were more like the Villa of today.

But I see what you mean.

Rumours at time was he'd fell out with Southgate. Probably about the best way to burn £50 notes.
I heard all sorts of rumours, from the realistic to the far fetched. I’d just be interested to hear his actual side of the story that’s all. He could properly win me over (and I’m sure plenty of others).

But I’ve already said, he should be applauded for his contribution this season and being willing to take a back seat.

Appraisal of Woodgate.
As a Person - Bad (based on Bowyer stuff and anecdotes of him about town)
As a player- Outstanding
As a Manager - Bad (Based on what he said, did and results)
As a coach/assistant - very good (based on comments and results)

Conclusion: Let’s keep him in a role he is good at.
