Woodgate remaining in some capacity

Many fans said Woody was a real asset to the Club, but had been made manager too quickly and not given the right financial support. A bit like Southgate in 2008.

Carrick has inherited a better side put together side and benefitted from having Woody as a number 2 and Scott to help him.

Still think he’ll step up when Carrick moves on in a few years.
That is what I was talking about the other day with a friend. Wondering how long we will actually get to keep hold of Carrick, which, of course, is a bit of a worry for us all given how brilliantly he has done so far. I hope he resists the temptation of a higher-paid job in the PL before his job is done here. Vital we go up this season for that reason as we're going to be inundated with offers if we fumbled in the playoffs.

I hope to see us promoted with MC and see him try and get us stable in the PL before he moves on ... but when he does, I think it's nailed on Gibbo is going to promote Woody again and give him another shot :ROFLMAO:.. They may feel the Carrick effect will still be in motion if Woodgate stays. Woody will have honed his coaching skills, ready to step in again. That is providing Carrick does not take him on his staff again where ever he ends up next!

I can see it happening, though. And expect it to. Just hope it is not this Summer because we miss out on promotion  ... (which I don't believe will happen) haha

this is a funny thread.

such insight and bile.

What’s funny about?
The fact that people expressed an opinion (v insight) on a message board?

If this is the first time you have heard people express an opinion which may, in the future, turn out wrong, you need to get out more.

He seems to be doing a good job - that is a better story

I am shocked that people weren't fond of the idea of the manager who'd nearly relegated us staying on immediately after he'd been sacked following a diabolical performance against Swansea that left us outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

What a strange thread to bump.

I'd understand if it was the thread about Woodgate returning with Carrick, I certainly wasn't happy about the prospect at the time and wanted an experienced assistant, but he thankfully seems to have proven me wrong.

There was so much bitterness, sarcasm and vitriol flying about. In the same way that Jonathan Woodgate has learned and grown maybe there is also a lesson to reflect on.

Tried to support him, but deep down I always knew it would end like this. Certainly don’t want him hanging around the first team now he’s been sacked, like some David Brent figure, just doesn’t make sense.
Trust you’ve changed your tune on this one.

I don’t like old threads being rehashed with the benefit of hindsight. That said I always thought Woodgate had Boro’s interests at heart and a guy like him, even though he failed in the top spot, should always be welcome at the Club in some capacity.

Mental that people were unhappy about the manager's ability and questioning the worth of him staying around the club after Middlesbrough 0-3 Swansea and this run of form:

This thread is literally from the day that Woodgate was sacked.

Exactly this

However well the team are currently performing, how does anyone know if it couldn’t be better still, with say a Rene Muelensteen instead of Woody? Just like nobody could say for sure whether the team would be better with Declan Rice instead of Jonny Howson!

Anything going well can always be improved on (or made worse). The reality is those posts were with Woody in a different role, one he clearly failed at, there is a case that says he was set up to fail by the man at the top and maybe he is only back because of some personal acknowledgement of decisions made that he was not in control of made by people above him. The bumping of this thread suggests to me that the poster has been carrying something he or she should have let go of a while back.

I’ve said I admire the way he’s been willing to be a number two to either rebuild his legacy and/or for the good of the club.

I’ll still never understand why he left for Spurs, who weren’t actually really any better than us at the time.

Pretty hard to imagine it going much better though?

Well he won a trophy (in fact he won them the trophy) with them so it could be said it wasn’t a bad decision.

There is always someone else of course there is. Having said that for the Club to make what was a pretty bold decision to bring him back to the Club in a coaching capacity it shows that they knew that he would continue to add value despite his failure as a manager. Only insiders would know that, his relationship with the players and his standing in the Club with no bridges burnt anywhere with except the fans ( based on very poor results). Hopefully what he is doing behind the scenes is helping to mend those bridges with us.
