I don't understand why it gets so much coverage in the press / tv, the crowds are extremely low so the general feeling is one of disinterest.
WSL headlines on bbc football why?
Most women go to mens football matches .Arsenal women have 16000 reading have 2000 liverpool and everton around 5000
which is comparable to league 2 who if the coverage were the same i could understand.

The FA are trying to build the women's game so created the structure we now have: WSL teams broadly aligned with many PL & other men's (up to this point) clubs.. a financial backer until they can fully support themselves (salaries paid by 'the club' no distinguishing between men's & women's finances)

The reasons the BBC has womens game on the main page, rather than separate men's & women's game - imho - are several: raises profile of WSL, it's club based so people looking for news on MU, Liverpool, Arsenal.. get it in one place & my thought: if it was in a women's section it would get few hits..

Personally I think the model is ok so long as it builds the grass roots women's game, I fear it will soon disappear up its own - a£$€ - with the monied clubs hoovering up the best talent resulting in an SPL style sham of a league & ultimately be ruinous for the women's game.. it may result in a euro monied super (rich & parasitic, imho) league however it will just limit / scupper the development of the women's game..

Just as the MCC has done with cricket, bringing in the 100 comp so both men & women play at the same venue on the same day & share the £$€ it has impacted both the men's 50 over game & Test matches as it stops play in key months..

I know I use the BBC website less & less for footy coverage as it now so focused on only PL & women's football.. links to championship & other leagues are way down the page: by design.. anywhere the word Championship is shown could be a hyperlink, however the deliberately don't add it..

The game is growing and the attention the national broadcaster give it can only improve the interest don't you think? Crowds in 2022/23 were up 30% and they are up again this season. I can't get worked up about the attention the media give it to be honest. Crowds that go Rugby Premiership games are pretty similar as are those that go to Rugby League. European Tour Golf on a weekly basis get on average 5,000 spectators per day and yet Sky give it saturation coverage.

I get the impression that some believe it gets so much attention due to some kind of politically correct agenda.

While I could understand some thinking that if it were the BBC alone, I find it hard to believe Sky cover it for anything other than commercial reasons: they feel there is the demand for this coverage, and they make money on it.

I've no problem with it myself; I only really watch during the international tournaments, and it's enjoyable enough. If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to read about it or watch it. I've heard ludicrous arguments against it, such as the hardship of having to scroll past women's score to see men's results on the internet...

Aww, does this upset you, OP?

To be fair it should only upset you if you're Scottish...although i'd personally say the standard is similar!

To be honest over the summer when I saw “Chelsea have signed X” I never knew if it was the men’s or women’s teams, I’d never ever of a fair players the men’s team signed.

In the end it’s just another form of entertainment but media and other forms of rhetoric want to push it onto the big stage when it really should be on at the Roxy for a far less price.

It is really pushed on us across Sky and BBC. Like above says you see say Man Utd sign whoever and you click on and its the womans team.

BBC push it because they have very little sports rights so they push the ones they still have (because they are cheap). Sky have bought the rights (because they were cheap) and they push it.

I'm not interested in cricket/rugby etc and find your rooms very easy to avoid. The annoyance with the football is because the headlines are ambiguous and they don't specify it is the women's league they are taking about. It's only a mild annoyance and I wouldn't get riled up over it but they must know it happens so they are doing it deliberately which is clickbait and the BBC should be above running clickbait.

The question you should be asking is why does it bother you? If you don't want to read about it then don't read/watch it. Much in the way that I treat the Premier League, I have no interest in it so ignore the 99% of football articles, radio and TV that cover it while ignoring the other leagues.

I think the issue is interchanging between mens and womens stories without being specific about the league they are talking about. Its confusing

Oh lads, you seem so scared of something that shouldn't even effect you. You know in the early 20th century women's football was as popular as mens, and that ultimately scared dudes so much that they made it illegal for women to play football for half a century. I grew up round Boro not being allowed to play football because I'm female, it was so unfair and I'm so glad that things have moved on for the likes of (one of our own) Beth Mead and her team mates.

If you think that what's between your legs affects your ability to play the beautiful game then you're delusional. Obviously you wouldn't play adult men against adult women but that's the same in any sport.

Go and regularly watch a women's team for more than one season and you'll love them just as much as you love the Boro. That's happened to me having bought me and my boy a cheap as nowt season ticket for Man City women (it's where i live now, don't judge me). I pay nowt to watch outstanding players like Lauren Hemp, Yui Hasegawa ad Khadija Shaw, it's incredible,

It takes a lot to swallow my pride, but when I watch those lasses, I've come to terms with shouting 'come on city'. It's the same effing game lads, get a grip of yourselves.

I do find the lack of distinction sometimes a little irritating but thats not the issue the OP has with Women's football. He is clearly having a pop at how much coverage the women's game is getting on TV out of proportion to those who watch the game live.

I for one don't really understand why it would bother him.

I blame women and women alone. If they didn’t expect equality then all would be fine, they should stick to discussing babies, washing up and Christmas dinner preparation. What is their problem, they need to understand men play football ffs surely? Alex Scott won’t be getting a rabbit from me again this Christmas, thats for sure.

(How many will take me seriously I wonder)

Christ some of our support live in the Stone Age don’t they? Maybe just ignore it.
