Without revealing your age who is your first favourite footballer?

Nope. In my opinion Messi is the best of all time. Stats back me up too.
We never had stats when I first started watching football, television coverage was something for the future and good footballers certainly didn't come about when Sky took control.

What we did have was every team full of honest and very good footballers who didn't put their flip flops on half way during a season.

Times change. The game moves on. Happens in all aspects of life. Some stats are really useful.

Was having the messi v maradona debate with my son earlier, messi is an unbelievable footballer but I favour maradona.

Main reasons being he played in an era when GBH was almost the norm.

Messi also played in one of the greatest sides of all time and also ultimately failed in the world cup whereas maradona virtually single handedly won footballs biggest prize and also won serie A with an unfashionable club .

Maradona also excelled in more than one country.

I also think what Maradona could have gone on to achieve if he had been the model pro that Messi is rather than snorting coke with the napoli mafia.

I think it's an impossible comparison to take any conclusions from. Talented footballers adapt to the eras they play in. I'm sure Messi would've adapted to the physicality of the 80s and Maradona could've fitted in now. Having said that his lifestyle would've caught up with him quicker with the pace of the game now perhaps.

People say Messi has failed with Argentina which can be fair in some ways but the reality is he's dragged them through qualifying at times as they've been dogged with disjointed squads and poor managerial decisions. For both players the pressure when playing for them is/was huge, I don't know whether or not it contributed to Maradona's issues

I agree time moves on, but you said you have stats to back your argument up of Messi being the best player, etc. and because you have these stats to prove it, you are right and the rest of us are wrong. I am saying you don't need stats to tell you how good a player was, their reputations do it for them.

I've got agree though, he's some player. ;)

I agree. He’s my favourite to watch when he’s in full flow. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion

Future boy I would love to hear more of your story and why you support the boro. 270 miles north, south east or west of Middlesbrough?

I hope the story doesn't disappoint you! To be honest it's not a particularly exciting story, but it's had a huge impact on my life. My nearest club is Crystal Palace, with Charlton and Millwall also in contention, and as a kid I loved playing and watching football, but I reached the age of 10 without having chosen a team to support. My dad nurtured my love of the game, but he was a huge non-league fan so he didn't push me towards any of the teams in the 92. I'm sure if he'd been a Palace or Charlton supporter then I would've done the same and that would've been it.

Anyway, I was 10 years old and I randomly decided that Nick Barmby was my all-time hero, and he played for Spurs, so I thought I'd support them. But only a few weeks later, he moved to Boro and I announced that I was now going to support them instead. I had no idea that Boro was one of the furthest possible clubs from where I lived, let alone the misery and heartbreak they'd bring to my life. My dad laughed and told me it would never last. But it did. Even when Barmby moved on. I stuck faithfully with the Boro and it's now been 26 years of dedicated support and love. I adore the Boro with all my heart and I can only hope to be accepted (much like Yusuf and some others) as an adopted Teessider even though I have absolutely no connection to the area.

My visits to the Riverside are severely limited by time, money and working hours, but I go to a lot of away games and I enjoyed being a holder of a Boro Pride card when they existed. It's been a few years since I was last at the Riverside, but I'd arranged a trip last April which sadly never took place for obvious reasons. I'll be back there as soon as I can. UTB

That is the beauty of football, it is all about opinions. How many times have you seen a fans favourite be disliked by a new manager, it happens.

I was never a lover of Slaven and that goes against the grain for the majority of Boro fans
