Willie

Only a youngster (me not him) but loved him. Can't remember if he was actually any good though!
He was quality. He had a beautiful left foot and could pick a pass and time a run. He had a lovely knack of drifting into the area unmarked. I think injuries did for him at Boro really. I had the pleasure of interviewing him a couple of years back and he couldn’t have spoken more highly of Boro. He still comes down from Scotland to watch us play.

Really? Comes to see us play? That's great.

Do remember his header at Old Trafford. Unbelievable save from Schmeichel.

The interview was not long after lockdown so he hadn’t been able to get down for a while but he said he comes to a few a season, with John Hendrie and he gave the impression a few of that Lennie team go to Boro games. He mentioned Kernaghan and Wilko. Honestly he was such a lovely bloke to talk to. He gave some really good quotes and talked really warmly about his two years with us.

I think he wanted to stay and Lennie wanted him to stay but they both knew Gibson was taking over and wanted to put his own stamp on it. Lennie told him he’d get him a new contract in the summer after we came down but then Sheffield United came in and it was a chance to stay in the Premier League. There was uncertainty off the field and so he had to take the offer from Sheffield.

He played for Ferguson’s Aberdeen and played for Celtic but said the most enjoyable spell of his career was with us. He said he loved playing in front of the Holgate and said if you organised a reunion tomorrow then every single one of that squad would be there. He said that the team spirit we had was probably the main reason we went up.

Was a complete pleasure to listen to him.

Fantastic, thanks for this.

That Schmeicel save, I reckon you had to be there in that rain to know how good it was. Video doesn't do it justice.

That Schmeichel save was one of those “if only” Boro moments in my 48 years as a Boro fan. We played so well that night and deserved a win. Fergie went on for his first ManU cup. If he’d lost that night the last 30 years of both clubs could’ve been very different

It was his first League Cup win, he won the FA Cup a couple of seasons before. But yes, a great game, Giggs was awesome that night. I travelled up to the 1/4 final v Peterborough with a mate. The Holgate was sold out so I needed up in the seats behind the goal. My mate couldn't get in as he didn't have a membership card so I left him in the Empire. Ripley scored a great goal.

That's great to hear Viv. I really rated Willie. I remember him nutmegging McStay in Mowbrays testimonial.
