Will most people be driving a Tesla in 2022?

What's the consensus on the taxes for EV in the future? The taxes paid on fuel currently are huge money. Will they eventually start to tax EV vehicles on the same way to avoid those losses?

It will have to be made up somewhere down the line. Whether it’s through increased road tax based on mileage, toll roads or some other way, it will be necessary at some point just to maintain and expand the transport network.

Will it though? The americans pay much less fuel duty than us and I think no road tax. They still have a road infrastrcture. Some of it is tolls, granted. Maybe that's the way to go.

It wont happen in the current political "climate".

Oil money is paid by the Parliamentary "lobby" to MP`s who wont contradict their economic / political backers.

They are doing the bidding for the huge multi-billion dollar global fossil fuel corporations to maintain their grip on our economy.

Idealy we would switch production at Washington and Burnston and Rover to producing electric vehicles - cheaply, by using tax revenues from reduced health costs created by the use of fossil - fuel powered cars.

Scrap HS2.
Its bollox, and does nothing for the majority of people who need to travel East to west and north to south.
Just an opinion.

So oil companies are paying MPs not to build electric car charging infrastructure?

How does tax revenue from reduced health care cost come about? Would that revenue be enough to fund R & D into electric vehicles and factories to build them?

HS2 is primarily a north south system isn't it?

That may be the case but it must be covered somewhere. I think we’ll end up with something between a mileage based system and automated tolls including congestion charges in more towns and cities.

I think road tax will return for all EV. The more expensive ones do pay tax from the second year. I can't see how fuel duty would work. How can you prove you're charging your car and not, I don't know, running the washing machine all night?

Fuel duty wouldn’t work. Although you could charge a small tax on quick chargers, they’re already more expensive than just charging at home and people would just do that instead.

You could get people to enter an estimated mileage on their road tax form and tax them based on that, although you’d have to adjust for actual mileage at the end of the year when they renew again to prevent people cheating the system.

Problem is, companies like Tesla and ionity already do "tax" their chargers. Ionity costs an absolute fortune. It all goes in the pocket of the car companies at the moment though. I agree there needs to be a state charging network and that needs to be taxed.
