Why no Barlaser...

I came back to the site to ask this question..

It's been on my mind since the game, I know the hive mind have decided he's no good but since the game I'm just left thinking about that missed opportunity.

Both Hayden and Mowatt played very defensively, and I get that Mowatt put a shift in but the second Dan came on we had a thrust and were completely dominating territory and possession, in 20 minutes he put Jones in excellent positions repeatedly.

We had been struggling for chance creation for at least a month before the game and the Yorkshire pirlo who prior to joining the club the most assists in the league wasn't given a run.

Anyway rant over. I wouldn't have come back but noticed no one had posted about him, much to my chagrin.

Different game by the time he come on. They already had a lead and sat back. Those opportunities weren't necessarily there earlier in the game.

I do think he can be a good player for us though. He's a very good passer. Just needs to impose himself more and do the dirty, defensive side a bit better.

I mean...

Why didn't he get a run of games he's been looking better and better in his cameos. We had nothing to play for in the run up to the playoffs and in the playoffs we knew they were going to be 10 behind the ball.

I just don't get it at all, he's a better player than Mowatt and potentially a very very good player.

I support Carrick and yes I don't see training but it just feels like that was a bad decision which compounded.

He hasn't been a better player here than Mowatt since he signed - Mowatt has been the better of the two
And as @Nano pointed out Coventry had a lead by the time Barlaser came on, and were happy to sit back. Before that those attacking opportunities weren't there

I do however hope that with a full pre-season under Carrick Barlaser will develop and gradually get more game time for us. He will hopefully become a good player for us

He looks a very good technical player but hes doesnt look blessed with a lot of physicality. I dont think him and Hackney can work as a midfield two because both are play makers not ball winners. We need a Boateng type athletic protector and either Barlaser or Hackney in a duo Or perhaps we go with a three at times and both can play along with a new midfield anchor. Certainly going with a 3 might be a better option agaisnt teams like coventry who flood the midfield

I agree with this. I would like us to sign a midfield b****d. Technically proficient enough to be comfortable in possession and move the ball quickly. But his main job is to foul the opposition.

So many of our goals conceded have been when we have lost the ball and our defence have been out of position. The goal Coventry scored was typical of this. We need someone who just does what needs to be done.

If Adam Clayton is in that team, or leadbitter, or Robson either of them, he would recognise when we are all at sea and just put a stop to it. Bosh!

Mowatt is so one footed (on his left), when he plays in the RCM role he really doesn't support attacks down that side well. I don't understand why he and Hackney weren't switched sides, but certainly Barlaser on that side opens up passing lanes to the right. I think when Jones and Dijksteel came on, Crooks should have also been brought on to that side to re-form their little trio.

Completely agree his one footedness and need to put the ball on his left foot before he does anything slows us down drastically, that extra touch gives the opposition time to mark and get back into position. It has hindered us a lot since he came into the team.

Couldn't agree more, without taking a shot at Mowatt he didn't add anything to the team outside of ball recycling (and one assist way back when).

From howson being out of the side through injury and Mowatt coming in our possession percentage has gone up significantly but chance creation down.

I massively disagree with people saying Barlaser needs a boateng in there, he's put in excellent tackles and shrugged players off.

The not physical myth has been a fmttm special based on no evidence.

That has to be a question for the recruitment team I think. With us being more prudent I thought any player we pay a fee for would have a place identified and role in the team. It seems not. Carrick did not fancy him alongside Hackney, but you cant drop Hackney. If we change to 433 then where does mcgree play. All interesting and part of the excitement of pre season for me

I would like to see us have the option of tweaking the 4-2-3-1 and this could mean Barlaser coming in alongside the midfield 2.

Rightly been pointed out there have been at times the midfield has been over run (slightly harsh) or reduced to passing sideways and backwards. Do think we need a Boateng like player in there as Howsons replacement - athletic, gets up and down the pitch, can play football, scores goals and wants to play for us for £10k week........

Barlaser has had a steady 6/10 start to his Boro career, hope he can kick on 👍

My argument would be he's not had the opportunity to be more than a 6/10...

In my eyes hackney has more boateng about him than people realise, the two of them together make a boateng.

When he was originally bought, everyone believed he was here to replace howson but through no fault of his own he was not given the opportunity.

As said above we paid a fee, we chased him like he was the prom queen and then... Nothing.

It's a strike against Michael.

Mowatt did a job away from home but he hasnt got the pace or mobility to drive a game at home. I wouldnt re sign him at all. As great as howson is he isnt naturally a defensive midfielder either. Its a problem we have had since leadbitter retired and probably one of the main reason we haven't beeen promoted. I am all for carricks attacking philosophy but we need to have one athletic player who can break up play if we are to get out of this league.

But if we have a Boateng type then you essentially rely more on Akpom to be a midfielder. We aren't allowed to field 12.

The reason we were scoring so many was because we didn't have a Boateng we had hackney and Howson together getting stuck in as best they could defensively (creating a semi Boateng between them) and thus unlocking us creatively.

Mowatt didn't have that in his locker, Barlaser does and his time at Rotherham showed that. To me it's the first sign that when the pressure was put on Michaels decision making he actually has gone against his own philosophy. Honestly I'll be keeping an eye on this next season, it was very similar with Aitor.

Hackney is not a Boateng - there is more to his game and he is not a sitting MF "destroyer".

Barlaser has been a bit unlucky in that the Howson/Hackney partnership worked so well. Not dissimilar to Forshaw and Grant/Clayton.

And Carrick has stressed all along players need to be patient, they are a valuable part of the squad and they will get their chance. Barlaser has been given cameo appearances and has done okay.

It's going to be an interesting summer and I'm sure Barlaser will be an integral part of the squad.

I would be surprised if Carrick wasn’t aware of the requirement for an athletic ball winner, especially as he played in a team with Darren Fletcher, who I thought was unbelievable in that role.

Hopefully that’s one of the top needs on the recruitment teams list.

Read what I wrote... I never claimed hackney was Boateng, re-read what I said.

I agree Howson/Hackney worked brilliantly and then Howson got injured. At that point we were already secure in the playoffs, essentially secure for 4th and where was he chance for Barlaser? Oh it never came. Mowatt didn't have anything other than solid performances, Gary O'Neil like performances even but kept playing every game despite the results getting worse and worse. Then the playoffs were upon us.

And who does this ball winner replace, how is it going to help us score goals like we did when we didn't have said ball winner in the team?
