Who is the most complete footballer ever?

There's a distinction between versatile and complete. Milner and Maradona are very different levels of player.

As in the best all rounder - passing, shooting, dribbling, tackling, running, heading etc etc

Alternatively, who could play every position (ignoring GK) the best?

I’d have to say Steven Gerrard.

I’d imagine he’d have been a premier league player no matter what position he played. Probably not many players who that applies to.
Cristiano Ronaldo

He's pretty much better at 4 of those aspects (passing, shooting, dribbling, running) than anyone else mentioned on this thread, and he's also fitter, in better shape, consistent, and a winner, and he's done it for nearly two decades.

Also, his heading/ jumping is exceptional.

The only thing he may not be great at is defending/ tackling, but who knows as no manager would be daft enough to ask him to tackle, when he can save energy for other things. I would bet he could have been a better defender than most though, if he wanted to, especially as a left/ right/ wing back.

I still think Messi is the best player with a ball at his feet though, and Fat Ronaldo the best ever striker, but Cristian Ronaldo is the most complete.

Can’t believe Bobby Charlton or Bobby Moore haven’t been mentioned.

My shout would be for Charlton, the most complete footballer I have ever seen. He could tackle, pass a ball and score with his head and either foot.

Half the players mentioned above can only kick it with one foot.

I was thinking that myself NC

As much as i hate Liverpool and everything associated with them, i’ve got to agree with Gerrard.

Centre Mid, Right Wing, Right Back, Centre Back, upfront…throughout his career he did play in a number of roles and at a high level too!! Especially when you think back to the mid to late 2000s / early 2010s

Roy Keane superior to Gerrard in every sense.

Paolo Maldini was sublime, Frank Rijkjaard also. Lother Mattheus as mentioned already, plus Philip Lahm who played in numerous positions. Players who would have performed in 7 or 8 different positions.

Most complete though? Heading ability, pace, skill, something out of the ordinary, longevity, goalso ring, work rate, World Cup Final goals, World Cup Final wins - got to be Pele surely?
