Who is the best ever player to play in the championship?

Maybe Boro bias, but as soon as I read the title it was Merson for me. It felt like he single handily dragged us to promotion

If you're talking 2nd tier, and not just the rebranded Championship, then surely Boro's George Camsell gets a shout. He's the record 2nd tier goalscorer with 59 in a single season. Also capped 9 times for England and scored 18 goals in those 9 matches.

There's also Cloughie.

Biased toward Boro maybe, but those two alone with the records they had brought into modern era would be worth millions.

Robert Huth. I can remember we didn't concede a goal in the first four games of the season, following relegation, with Huth and Wheater at CB.

What a difference it would have made to our season if we hadn't have sold him.

Merson was fantastic, but he wasn't even the best player in the championship that season.

Hello,

Sorry this is a like a Sociology A level question, with no incorrect answers!

Right for the sake of thread, the championship since 1998, and the said player made his name in the championship and he has not had a loan spell done nothing then went onto win a champions league or international caps

Merson for Boro.

Mitrovic is a good shout also.

Merson has to be up there surely? To be picked for an England World Cup squad after a season in the second tier is remarkable stuff.

Surely though the criteria should be actual performances in the division, as opposed to playing in it at either the beginning or end of a world class career?

Based on that I would offer Mitrovic or Neves

If we are looking at what they achieved in the Championship rather than future or past ability then it is clearly Mitrovic. It was like when the opposition team brings a Northern League player as a ringer to your weekly 5 a side game.
