What about bikini atoll?Midway Island.
It's off limits to everyone now, and it's a nature reserve.
Apparently it's still like it was in 1945, with plenty of relics of the 1942 battle which ultimately decided both the war in the Pacific, and indirectly the war in Europe.
Sorry, we're closed at the moment. Please try again in a year or two.I've always fancied following England Cricket for a winter season... Aus & or NZ... esp NZ.. time enough to explore both islands & both culture & language should be ok... plus they drive on the correct side of the road.. ;-)

Best place I’ve been. The warmest and friendliest people I’ve ever met. A paradise between the mountains and the ocean.
Tahiti.
Looks absolutely stunning, but it's on the opposite end of the world and would be completely outside of my price range otherwise.
But I've already been to France, so it may be excluded under your criteria.
If not there, I'd fancy Buenos Aires as well.
On a related note I was reading about the nuclear tests conducted by the US after WW2 and they used surrendered German Cruiser Prinz Eugen in two tests, it survived both but after Test Baker it was towed to Kwajalein Atoll where it capsized and is still there to this day. Two years ago the US Navy pumped the last of the oil from the tanks and tested the wreck for radiation. You can see the wreck on Google Maps satellite view. What about bikini atoll?

Plymouth (where Plymouth rock is, the first time the settlers put their feet on American ground)
