When was Teesside in its pomp?

Box in the bus station. Wasn’t it part owned by Gary Gill? I haven’t been down the town for ages, apart from a quick pint after the match, but Changes (behind Binns) was still there a year or so back. Couldn’t believe it was still open.
Wasn’t there a famous thread about a lass in Box?

I think many of us agree that the Boro town centre was at its best during the mid 80s and 90s, when smoggyland was pumping out the steel and plastics and the cash in hand was the order of the day. Not to mention Billy Paul’s and the Madhouse attracted some far off visitors — too bad today’s younguns can’t experience those days.

Where DO the youngsters go now? I know the Empire is still there, but is that it?

My Heyday in town was the early 80's before the industrial collapse. At the time older people used to say the best times were 50's and 60's when it looked like this, teaming with life, pubs and people in the centre. Everyone remembers their era fondly. Really not sure what young people now will remember.

The town is fcuked, as is the rest of country to a lesser degree - same as most of Europe and America in fact. All part of the plan of course, they have to destroy everything first before they can sell you the solution - build back better and all that 🐂💩
There he is, the boards resident conspiracy nut wheeling out his latest WEF conspiracy nonsense

The "WEF conspiracy" likely refers to various conspiracy theories associated with the World Economic Forum (WEF). These theories often claim that the WEF is part of a secretive global agenda to control economies, politics, and societies. They allege that the WEF aims to establish a new world order, erode national sovereignty, and impose authoritarian measures. However, these claims lack credible evidence and are widely considered to be unfounded. The World Economic Forum is an international organization focused on public-private cooperation to address global economic challenges. While it does hold annual meetings attended by prominent figures, including political leaders and business executives, the conspiracy theories surrounding it tend to be speculative and not supported by credible sources. It's essential to critically evaluate such claims and rely on reliable information.

Less people go clubbing in general, hence there are less clubs. People got tired of ever rising drinks and entry prices, and getting groped or punched.

Clubs are still popular but younger people would much rather go to comedy gigs, see bands, festivals and go to cocktail bars or home than line up in pastel coloured Ben Sherman shirts and straps dresses outside the empire in the rain.

They do better in bigger cities but in places like boro there are only a few left, can only think of empire, spencleys upstairs, dickens in gold room which is largely events only now I think, flairs/popworld, purple onion downstairs maybe? Prob a few others kicking about; but used to be loads. Think only one place for the gay scene at sapphires which used to be Rooney's. Used to
Be Cassidy, Annie's bar and Tiny at various times that I know of. You go to places like Leeds and there is an entire gay friendly area, on top of vibrant nightlife but it's a much bigger place.

Yeah I don’t ever remember Boro having much of a gay scene. That place opposite the bus station maybe.

Don’t think it was Box, but I remember the thread. Was verging on stalking
I remember that thread now it's mentiond. It might have been about a girl in Garage - the place near M&S and Dundas Arcade. I remember some really attractive girls in there in the late 90's early 00's.

I haven't been on this board for that long, but between this post and your post about women's football I can already tell you're the resident fool 👍

Weird how these threads contrast with other ones saying town was dangerous to to go out in back then because people would smash your head in at the drop of a hat. Could some of this be people looking back through rose tinted glasses?

There's always been somewhere that I know of, not that I'm into that scene myself but got taken to 2-3 nights by friends. Cassidy's was the one near McDonald's

then there was the one in former Rooney's

Which has now become sapphires

And Tiny on Albert road

Which Google tells me is not really a gay bar exclusively anymore and is just "inclusive" but apparently voted boro's best club

And there was always Charlie's / Annie's bar which I think is long closed, above this place

I want to say there was one on Newport road but I only have a vague memory of it being plain fronted with a cactus in the window, not even sure if that was a gay club or just a regular seedy looking joint as it was before my time I think.

Hopefully someone can help me out with that one as it will do my head in thinking about it 😂

Yeah I don't have that many fond memories of smoking in nightclubs. As a non smoker I hated scrubbing the smell of cigarettes out of my hair and clothes the day after a night out and someone would always walk into you with a lit one.

Now it's like being on a plane, and can't imagine it being allowed.

Great photo.
Looks like Binns is the only tall building and houses everywhere.
Historic quarter fully intact.

Yep I would never have said I liked smoking in clubs. But if I do smell fags indoors now I get a weird sense of nostalgia, not that I want it back.

I never got my head smashed in in town. But that might just be because I’m absolutely nails.
