What's the greatest thing you've ever done?

When I was a teen in the late 90s we where on holiday and another kid a few years younger than me who was with us(was loads of the family went and he is my mams cousins son)decided to jump in the deep end of the swimming pool pretty early in the morning before it had officially opened and obviously no life guards about, he also couldn't swim. Anyway I got him out and he was ok. I haven't seen him in years but last time I saw anything about him on Facebook he has done well for himself and has a pretty important role within his local community.

Being there for someone who was most definitely suicidal by staying with them till they came 'back' - twice. You learn a lot about people and mental health, it both humbled me and opened my eyes to the way the human mind is capable of distorting reality to the degree a sufferer believes things that it conjures are real.

Not going through my 3 suicide "attempts", 2 I was lucky. Still along way to go but kicking poison called alcohol. I have an amazing life once I geta decent length of sobriety.

Saved an old bloke when I was 16, collapsed and went blue. Most scared I had ever been. No one about and had bang on loads of doors for someone to call 999, 35 years ago so mobile phone.

During my time in the Army I was part of the U N Protection Force during the Bosnian war. We smuggled a husband, wife and 3 small children from a village that was being ethnically cleansed through a load of illegal checkpoints and across the border into Croatia where they reunited with their family.

Some amazing stories on this thread. As for me done some good things but nothing i would call great I have helped save lives but it was part of my job description so doesn't count as great. However it is an amazing feeling to have played a part in saving someone's life

I went to a Holi festival in the city I live in this weekend. What should have been (and for the most part was) a beautiful celebration of peace and expression of culture from the Indian community here descended into what I can only call a public lynching.

I don't think I've encountered such a desire to kill a man in cold blood by a crowd of people before.

He was being very provocative with his dancing and behaviour towards women, arrogant fcuker and I subsequently found out he is Pakistani which I don't think helped. He overstepped the mark with a man's wife and what was initially a one-on-one scrap turned into a lynching.

He was on the floor bleeding and they were stamping on him and kicking him in the head.

I'm proud and surprised at myself for doing it but I threw myself between him and the crowd of blokes and took a few digs in doing so until the police were able to get a control of the situation.

The newspaper I write for won't let me cover it because they think it will have a detrimental impact. This frustrates me.

Quite a thing having to think of this but I’d probably go for a relatively recent event.
There is a company called FareShare who basically pick up food destined for the rubbish tip (altho still fit to eat) and re distribute to those in need.

Food poverty in Lincolnshire is as bad as anywhere. but the numbers are relatively low and in challenging logistical locations.
Our business has a 100 shops selling food and the county is full of agricultural enterprises.

Fareshare is a charity and basically operates out of key hubs in major conurbations. The cost of coming to Lincoln was prohibitive and I remember a memorable day when their CEO said he could never see it happening.

Took me two years bringing various people together - a business that would donate a warehouse; a business to sponsor vans; a business to cover operational costs….. all for a given period of time to test whether it was sustainable for the long term.

We got them started with 80% of their food coming from my shops. Now, they don’t pick any up from us as all the big agricultural players are on board. Even Gusto!

They’ve made it work - delivered the equivalent of over 100000 meals to those in poverty and everyone involved is chuffed to bits.

The other proud moment was standing up to racists (ref Emerson) at the stadium of light, in front of my two lads…… in the Sunderland end. It was dangerous but, they tell me, made a massive impact.

I was in Red or Black and got beat to a million in the final.

Greatest achievement is bringing up 4 boys. The first two of which was in relatively challenging circumstances at times. Not only keeping myself on the straight and narrow for them, but keeping alive for them after my ex divorced me. (though no fault of my own I hasten to add)
I always tell my boys that 'It's nice to be nice', and they have grown into well adjusted, humble and hard working young men.
Also, not really an achievement but something which I am immensely proud of is volunteering for a charity called Bloodrun EVS. We provide an out of hours free service to the NHS for delivering blood products, infant formula milk, test results etc so patients can get better quicker. Did this for a few years before stepping down recently due to my own mental health issues. The hours were late and long and tiring at times, but incredibly rewarding to put something back into the community. It's nice to be nice.
