What on earth Is wrong with people?

If this is a memorial to those who died in WW2 - those men and women died fighting fascism and racism.

Looking on Google Maps it is the Douglas Haig memorial that they are cleaning so it's a WW1 memorial. Not that it matters, it still shouldn't be defaced.

However, quite an apt choice given Haig was a 'leader' who allowed a high number of excess deaths through disregard of the facts, and who threw bodies into the firing line with no real thought of the outcome. Not dissimilar to some of the world leaders at the moment ...

Well said Finny. It just takes a couple of “mischievous” people to start circulating falsehoods on social media and people wade in with assumptions. It’s a worrying world.
This wasn't a falsehood this actually happened, well done to those who went and cleaned it up

In pure numbers terms, disrespecting those who died in WWI is much worse than disrespecting those who died in WWII

Either way it's such a scummy thing to do. I know it's said a lot but that's because it's an inalienable fact: These people gave their lives, and even those that didn't lived in appalling conditions and risked their lives to provide you the umbrella of freedom that you currently live under. It's disgustingly disrespectful.

It wasn't the cenotaph as stated it was the Haig statue

I’m not condoning any defacement of public statues but you started the thread with the line about defacing war memorials and it turns out to be a controversial memorial to a divisive figure not to the war dead in general. Controversial that even that most left wing of institutions the Daily Express has been asking "Why do we let this man cast a shadow over our war dead?"

Have they found out the identity of the two interviewing characters ? One challenging about the signs being lifted and the other " the precious statue " . Would like to know a bit about them !

Yes if you look at FYB UK on Facebook they found out where one of them works she's called Shelby alwani

Always brings a smile to my face when I read about the narrative that they ‘died to give us freedom.’
None of us were there when these youngsters signed up. The historical accounts for the reasons for signing up for their own death sentence in squalid conditions are worth pondering over before we all get gooey eyed about their motives.

Awful, beyond words what they went through.

Yes clearly it happened. It’s yours and others interpretation of “war memorials” (plural) that I suspect is the falsehood. Furthermore some WW1 Veterans Associations in fact do not regard Haig’s statue as a memorial to the dead of WW1.
