What on earth Is wrong with people?

Yes clearly it happened. It’s yours and others interpretation of “war memorials” (plural) that I suspect is the falsehood. Furthermore some WW1 Veterans Associations in fact do not regard Haig’s statue as a memorial to the dead of WW1.
Haig was definetly a divisive figure but he won some of the biggest battles the British have ever faced, one hundred day offensive is probably the one that won the war, to deface his status is to deface a war memorial.

Always brings a smile to my face when I read about the lines that they died to give us freedom.
None of us were there when these youngsters signed up. The historical accounts for the reasons for signing up for their own death sentence in squalid conditions are worth pondering over before we all get gooey eyed about their motives.

Awful, beyond words what they went through.
That a very bold statement to make, have you ever had the pleasure of speaking with ww2 veterans? Amazing brave individuals, if they hadn't signed up you wouldnt even be alive. A bit of gratitude can go a long way.

Like I said I don’t condone vandalism on any public statue whoever it is and however divisive they were but I think there is a difference between the memorial for the memory of the fallen in the wars and the memory of one individual who reeks controversy. if it was the cenotaph then rightly it would have been universally condemned My great grandfather is named on the Memorial at Thiepval and I proudly visit it every year (probably not this year as it turns out). It is an extremely moving place and if you haven’t been you must go. I don’t know what his thoughts would be on General Haig but he and his friends and comrades were sent to perish on his orders and I’m pretty sure they would be uncomplimentary.

I have been to thiepval and quite a few others in France, they are amazing places and very humbling.

Never spoken to a WW2 vet.
Read lots - incredibly brave and, frankly, even reading the reports can’t give any of us an insight to what they went through.

I’m really not sure what I should be grateful for (and I’m not looking for an argument by the way). A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.

It's up to you wether you think you should be grateful and you'll get no argument from me, for me personally I feel extremely grateful for what they did and I have spoken to quite a few, extraordinary people, if they hadn't of put their lives on pause wether that's temporary or permanently then we wouldn't be having this discussion. I wouldnt say a whole lot of water has passed under the bridge it was only 80 years ago

My dad never talked about WW2, I asked him was he frightened every day. He said as they told him nothing it was pointless
He said he was once in Aldershot and did not know he thought it was Colchester.
It's very difficult to judge yesterday when today we know news in 5 minutes.
