What needs to happen over the summer then?

I like that Poveda at Wednesday. Also would test Fulham for Jay Stanfield.

There's plenty of value to be had and as said above, we only need 3-4 new first team players.

I'm also in a minority in that I think Greenwood should be signed on. £1.5m after a year at the club and he clearly has ability.

That looks about right. I’d want Lath as our number 1 striker next season.

So maybe just a younger striker to compete with Coburn, maybe a more mobile forward who can play in the attacking midfield positions as well
Alternatively a cf who can drop into the 10 or lw roles

I'm starting to quite like Greenwood's effort and niggle, for £1.5 million, if he'll take a decent pay cut I think he'd be a canny squad player.

Someone put up the assists and goals for those who play wide in the 'three'. Whilst they're all a bit poorer than you'd hope if we want to be challenging, you can't really say his contribution is a lot worse than McGree and Jones who are often lauded and seen as fan favourites.

It wouldn't take much improvement in his finishing for him to be a decent option for us. I would have liked to see him tried down the right, with Forss up top while Jones and Lath were out injured, but it wasn't to be.

Jones - 30 matches 6 goals 2 assists
Forrs - 21 matches 7 goals 2 assists
McGree - 22 matches goals 4 assists 1
Greenwood - 35 matches 5 goals 3 assists
(taken from Jones thread, I've not checked)

I'll be disappointed if we sign Greenwood on a permanent deal.

His stats are decent but so many moves break down after he's received the ball. He runs down blind alleys.

I can't agree with prioritising pace.
I know it's popular, but it's fools gold.
Technical ability beats physical attributes like pace every time. Pace doesn't come any cheaper though.

I'm all in favour of playing with pace, but just about the first thing I was taught about football is the ball is always faster.

Playing at the running pace of even the fastest player is playing slowly

Is there nobody in the U21s ready to make the step up ? Is there not a Hackney-esque diamond waiting to be polished ?

Those stats show why we are where we are, we need more goals and assists from the 3 behind the striker .
On another thread I put up stats for 3 potential players
Pavel Sulc - 18 goals 5 assists £3m
Danny Armstrong - 9 goals 14 assists £1m
Harvey Knibbs - 15 goals 6 assists £1m
42 goals , 25 assists between 3 of them for £5m , as against
22 goals 11 assists between 4 of them .
If it's true Forss and Mcgree are going for £12m the pair roughly , and Greenwood goes back , we could sign the above , more than double our goals for and make £7m , and buy Saldanha / Sulc / Chytil.
Or
O'hare free , Sorba £4m , Chair £6m , Dolan £3m. That looks nice 👍
I will add Ike Ugbo SWFC CF as another option at £4m

But you do need pace in certain areas of the pitch, and it frightens the life out of the opposition.

Pace is important in certain places though, having a forward with pace can make the opposition defence sit 15 yards deeper and leave a bigger gap between their defence and midfield which can be exploited. No pace and a high line and high press can be used against you

Would not pay anywhere near 6 million for Ilias Chair
Would you swap Chair for Forss or Mcgree ( if they do want out )
I am Rileys biggest fan , and reccomended him to people well before we signed him , was thrilled we got him , and am gutted at the rumours he may move on . Chair is my 2nd choice to replace him , O'hare 1st , but think he will get better offers , Knibbs another option , Sulc , options.

I watched the winger for Swansea drop his shoulder and go past Thomas on Saturday, I think fullbacks should have a bit more pace as they come up, against some rapid wingers.
Walker for England has to always be on the cover (how many times has he been last man and dragged them out the ****?)
Pace is very important in a team.

I would , even with his off field issues . Not that we have £6m to spend on one player , unless we sell Forss £6m or Mcgree £8m . ( my valuations)

I agree you need some in the team; you need some if everything. However, it's not a magic bullet. If you make a policy of signing players on the basis of pace alone, you're heading for relegation. It's as limited as trying to build the tallest team you can. A successful team has to prioritise skill.

I agree. Pace is useful but it's not the be all and end all.
Ball retention is key if we are going to play out from the back. Players who can receive the ball under pressure and retain it.

I agree it isn't a magic bullet and pace without good technique and tactical awareness is pointless.

Being comfortable on the ball is important for our team, I agree nobody should be signed without decent on the ball ability too. I'd say tactical ability is even more important in a good footballer than pure skill. Knowing where to be on the pitch and when to make a pass or attempt a bit of skill is more important than having a box of tricks,
