What has Middlesbrough given to the world music scene?

The Brodsky Quartet... started life in the North-East England town of Middlesbrough in 1972. The region was famous for its rich musical culture, with hundreds of children benefiting from free instruments and lessons with a dedicated teaching staff and an extensive network of youth orchestras from beginner to conservatoire level... (from their website).

Eddie Jobson, virtuoso electric violinist out of Curved Air and Roxy Music - proud Billinghamian (along with Jet from Gladiators).
"proud Billinghamian" Never heard this term before is it pronounced Hame as in the Scotsman or Geordies word for home or Ham as in in the Port of Eating Ham there's a sailor or a Ham sandwich?

Poorer areas tend to be pretty good at developing influential and popular bands, why is there such a lack of them from Boro? Is it a lack of facilities?
