What has been our worst transfer decision?

1. Rudy Gestede - without question. wrong player to being in when we did, turned down £6m from Leeds and then was dreadful for us and held many good players back.

Schwarzer tells the story of what happened on a podcast. Very poor from the club

There's a massive list tbh

Mark Schwarzer leaving and sticking with Jones/Turnbull
Luke Young out to replace him with Justin Hoyte
Not selling Gestede to Leeds and getting our money back
Selling Bamford to Leeds
Releasing JFH the season Southgate took over
Selling Juninho to Celtic when we got into Europe
Anything Garry Monk did barring Howson and Randolph
"Selling Juninho to Celtic when we got into Europe"

As much as i love the guy i can't agree.
We did well in Eurpore the first season then came 7th, and got to the final the year after.

The likes of JFH and Viduka etc were a level above where Juninho was at that time. I can't see where he would've fitted in that side.

Gestede, Alves, Mido, Branco but I still think the worst transfer was Strachan and all the **** jocks he brought with him, maybe only Robson was decent. Willo Flood and the others were shocking and nearly bankrupt the club.
Initially, I thought the great jockification looked a promising strategy. I had failed to factor in the fact that Boyd and McDonald had tremendous goalscoring records because they were playing against Willo Flood and his ilk every week.

George Saville for £7 mil

This could be total rubbish, but I was told by a Millwall-supporting friend, who's been correct about a lot of other Millwall-related things over the years, that our initial offer was £8m for Saville and another midfielder who was supposed to be better than him - I forget who it was - perhaps Jed Wallace? Then Millwall "negotiated" the sale to be £7m for just Saville. My mate was laughing quite a lot as he related this to me.

Not buying Kevin Phillips when Sunderland got relegated. Instead we spent £8.15m on Maccarone. Phillips would have been less than half that amount and he was a proven Premier League goalscorer.

Saville for £7 million and Fletcher for a similar amount, what on earth were we thinking?

I think we were trying to get Wallace on loan weren't we, maybe with a transfer agreed at the next window or whatever. So the initial numbers could actually make sense.

(Well Saville for £7m doesn't make sense, but you know what i mean)

Aden Flint for £5 mil or George Saville for £7 mil have to be up there..
Wasn't Flint £7m as well? 😳🤦‍♂️

Signing a defender based primarily on his goalscoring record. I think we hit peak Pulis with that one. Jesus wept.

The same man is adamant we couldn't afford to keep Bamford as we needed to raise funds (for him to spend on goalscoring defenders).

Careful with Steve's money though. I'd hate to see him being reckless.

Signing Alves for 14 mil or whatever it became. A period of time when we weren't spening much and needed goals, if he had performed the way we expected him to we wouldnt of gone down, an might have given us time to rebuild. Not helped by the other striker signings being Mido/Emnes for a further 10 million.!

Britt/fletch a close second! Gizzed our parachute payments away right there!

Some other shockers mentioned here, but think you have to factor in the crippling long term financial ramifications of the deals.

Not selling Gestede to Leeds was insane, buying him after he took a fan to court was equally insane, however you can make a case for hundreds.

Mine would be Charlton not paying the extra £10K to Coventry for David Cross, if he had, I believe we would have won the First Division in 74/75.
Could well be true Col, but I'd have preferred Mariner.

You've missed the other prolific goalscorer Aliadière ... to think we went from Viduka, Yakubu, Nemeth (underated), JFH and Maccarone to those mentioned above and Dong Gook Lee

crippling long term financial ramifications = Mendieta although we didn't pay a fee for him

Horrific! however, at least Aliadiere/Dong Gook Lee (still convinced he had a touch of the ali dia's about him) didn't break the bank. Thats why Alves always gets my vote in this type of question.

Tin hat on time, but I always liked Aliadiere, unpopular opinion i know, felt we never utilised him right. Think he would thrive nowadays playing wide in a 4231/433
