What’s happened to Payero

I haven't watched any of his matches to know whether he has been performing well or not. Not everyone blows leagues wide open though. If he's doing his job and they are winning leagues and cups then it's difficult to know whether he is not performing or whether they have just got better players ahead of him. Not like they are stuggling to avoid relegation and he's still not getting picked.
Seems to be their version of Alex Mowatt.

lets be honest about him and not kid ourselves we are missing out on the 2nd coming of Juno because he is Argentinian
I bought into the hype when we have signed him but now see more similarities with failed imports than those who we love, if he was from scotland no one would want him back.
he did ok when played but most of the time was injured again and again.

while on loan lets be honest Boca would have won all these cups etc without him. you cannot use the fact they have won cups as a reason to say he has been a success when its clear he been a bit player

the amount of games and sub appearances he is making shows he is not setting them alight. If he was hitting it out the park he would be getting far more game time and I would be first to say I hope they don't buy him and he make the most of him

if you go on twitter and translate comments their fans are not taking to him or rating his contributions.

yet people expect him to come back to the championship (definitely a tougher league) and hit it out the park, I think the reality is he comes back and then ends up finding another club back home to see his contract out.

sure we will look at him in pre-season when boca clearly don't buy him, but do not think he is going to be better than anything else we have on the books presently, and I do not believe he wants to be in england anyways

I liken it more like when we loaned spoarar and we had a deal lined up to buy him if things went well, he was bang average for us in the end and there was no chance we were taking that option to buy up and let him just return home.

but hey I would love it if he returned and was the beast we hoped he was going to be, but looking over his career before he joined us I think most people got carried away and bought into the hype but when you look back now he has performed roughly in line with what he did previously, but was nice to get excited over a transfer after years of dross being signed lol

Occasional sub

He’s been an unused sub 3/4 times and has started 9 games for them

9 starts, he's been on loan since last July

He's played the full 90 minutes once that I can see

This season league:
Squad: 4, Starting eleven: 1, Substituted in: 1, On the bench: 2, Suspended: 0, Injured: 1

This season cup:
Squad: 1, Starting eleven: 0, Substituted in: 0, On the bench: 1, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

Last season league;
Squad: 17, Starting eleven: 8, Substituted in: 6, On the bench: 3, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

Copa Argentina
Squad: 3, Starting eleven: 2, Substituted in: 0, On the bench: 1, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

Supercopa argentina
Squad: 1, Starting eleven: 0, Substituted in: 0, On the bench: 1, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

League champions cup
Squad: 0, Starting eleven: 0, Substituted in: 0, On the bench: 0, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

So I make that 31 games they've played since he joined

He was injured for one game

He has started 11 games, staying on the pitch for 90 minutes once - usually hooked between 50th-70th minute
Come on a sub 7 times- usually 70-80 minutes into the game
Remained on the bench 8 times

He doesn't strike me as someone they're going to blow £3m on but maybe we'll all be surprised

When he does play, he comes off, or comes on late. Seems like he is there to make up the numbers.

We paid good money for him so we must have done some scouting and determined that he was a good prospect. He was also included in Argentina's Olympics squad.

Players regularly struggle adapting to the English game but it doesn't make them bad players. His injury came at a bad time last season. He would have had a chance with our injuries and suspensions. He also had pretty much no chance under Wilder anyway, a man that is well known for not trusting youth or foreigners. I would let someone else take a look at him before writing him off completely based on Wilder's judgement.
Exactly just ask Josh coulson

Coburn went on loan to a lower league club and is proving himself, setting a case up for future selection.

Payero has gone to a much lower quality league club and gotten a nickname and not much else.

Fans in your tweet you posted above are saying he didn't do much or that if they did buy him we'd probably want more than they'd want to pay

We love a south american wonderkid.. i'd go so far to say it is in our club DNA now. it's something we've opted for so many times that it feels like part of who we are.
(galvanised of course by Juninho)

The number 10 raises expectations.. perhaps to the level that were heaped on Carlos Marinelli, but while we were looking for the next Julio Arca circumstances left us with another Bruno Zuculini.. he might take a few years to find his feet but he's still young and through covid and injuries it didn't quite work for him here.

of course I want him to return fire us through the playoffs and really come into his own in the premier league. I would love it!

but maybe it doesn't happen like that and payero's story continues without us being involved. a cult hero who's memory is perhaps left untarnished from a return. talk of what could have been will build him high above what any mere mortal could accomplish. a dream, a myth.. a wish that didn't come true.

It’s different to occasional sub that you said

I think Boca Juniors are bit better than Bristol Rovers :ROFLMAO:

Of course Boca Juniors are better than Bristol Rovers, but what he is getting at, is most of the other teams in that league are poor sub standard at best, and Payero is not setting the league alight, which he should be playing in a better team in a poor league.
If he was playing most games, and playing well in matches then great, but he is not, he is struggling to hold down a place and more concerning, he is often substituted when he does start. I think that says it all.

Yea, they are. But they're also in a league rated a lot worse than championship division as the league qualify table shows above, so he will be playing against some extremely low rated players.

So he has been sent out on loan to show what he can do. And in a poorer rated league than ours, he has struggled to make an impact. Few starts, often on the bench or brought on late. £3m is about the max they've paid for players last few years until 2019 - and most have been frees or low fees, so I'd be surprised if they took up the reported option of £3m for him. But they might, who knows.

In a poorer league than ours, Josh Coburn broke into the side as a sub and has scored 9 goals in 22 games as a 19/20 year old, on top of sinking spurs.

One of these players probably has a future at the boro in some capacity, and one of them probably doesn't due to only having a year left on his deal and choosing to go home over to a European club on loan.

where he went out on loan says it all about his intentions with us.
There is no way the club wanted him to go back there unless it was resulting in a sale, this was a last resort move.

The club would have much rather he went out on loan somewhere in england or europe to stand a chance of developing him or developing a sale which may bring a few million in.
Going to Argentina is just going to run his contract down or result in a lowball transfer.

He wouldn't go anywhere in uk or europe on loan only back home, the lad was home sick and I'm sure part of the deal to get it over the line will of been him surrendering some wages to be back home (like getting paid what boca are paying us each week for his wages as I do not imagine they are paying the full wages)

at least he hasn't been injured as much as last season that's the one positive we can take from his loan lol,
love him to come back a new player with a point to prove like akpom but I don't see it or think his heart is in it, but then I didn't see it with akpom either, but I do think the difference is clear between both of them akpom's dream has been all along to make it over in england as a striker, I don't think payero liked the reality of playing away from home once he moved away, as if we were just a bad fit for him there was options where he could of went abroad in europe and he didn't take them up

I don't think it is? He has played very few games, been hooked when he has and been brought on late when he's come on. To me that is an occasional sub. He could have started over 30 games and has started 10, only playing 90 minutes once. He's played a bit part in their team.

Occasional sub would be a player getting 20 mins once every few game

They occasionally come on as a sub

either way no matter how you title his role he has been below par for expectations of performance level while out on loan to warrant a return to the first team in the championship

I was wondering if this would get bumped when I saw he scored last night. Boca got beat 3-2 at home and he was subbed off with about 25 mins to go.

Go on Martin! Delighted for him.

Gonna be very interesting to see what happens with him during the summer.
Wonder If he fancies it with the football we're playing.
On the flip side, have we passed him by now?

I’d love to see him work under carrick.
